Volleyball Falls to Temple, Downs Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The University of Maryland volleyball team improved its record to 2-2 overall on Saturday evening, defeating Georgetown in five games -- 8-15, 15-7, 5-15, 15-10, 17-15 -- in the final match of the Georgetown Invitational.
The Terps fought a hard, decisive battle against the Hoyas where defense was the name of the game for both teams. The Terps and the Hoyas each struggled offensively, with each of them hitting below .200. Offensively for the Terps, freshman middle hitter Katie Cramer hit .379 off of 13 kills on 29 swings. Senior outside hitter Kim Adolphs totaled a team-high 14 kills while junior outside hitter Kate Hannas hit. 345 on 13 kills. Freshman setter Libby Alberts totaled 46 assists and had 11 digs to quarterback the Terps. On defense, once again it was Adolphs, who for the third consecutive time, recorded 25 or more digs, posting 26 digs against the Hoyas. Cramer played phenomenal at the net, as well, recording seven blocks, including a team-high four block solos. Maryland dominated the net as a team, posting 16 blocks to Georgetown's 11. Georgetown was led by the 21 kills of Kiran Gill.
The win against Georgetown was a much-needed win as the Terps lost a heartbreaking five-game set to the Temple Owls earlier in the afternoon. The Terps jumped out to a 16-14 game-one victory only to watch the Owls win games two and three, 15-7, 15-9, respectively. Maryland stole game four, 15-12, before Temple won the fifth and deciding game, 15-13. Senior Jaime Summers and junior Beth Murphy each totaled 14 kills to lead all Terp hitters, with Summers posting a team-high .400 hitting percentage.
In an evenly contested offensive match, it was the dominance of Temple's Alma Kovaci that lifted the Temple Owls to the victory. She finished the afternoon with 30 kills and 19 digs and hit .381, including a .571 hitting percentage in game four.
Adolphs was sensational on defense, tallying 28 digs. Alberts totaled 41 assists and had 19 digs which was second on the team. Cramer stuffed nine blocks to lead Maryland's tall front line. Adolphs was selected to the all-tournament team.
Maryland returns home on Tuesday, Sept. 8, hosting UMBC at 7 p.m.
