Penn State University
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Virginia will host the 1999 ACC Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, March 6 in Charlottesville, Va. North Carolina will attempt to win their seventh title in the last eight years. The Tar Heels feature 125-pounder Chuckie Connor and 149-pounder JohnMark Bentley, ranked No. 6 and No. 10 in the nation respectively by Amateur Wrestling News.
Home team Virginia also has two Top 20 grapplers--No. 12 Matt Roth at 125 and No. 14 Jim Harshaw at 165 pounds. The Cavaliers are currently in a three-way tie with the Terps and NC State in the conference.
Individually, the 125-pound division will be the most competitive. Connor, a two-time ACC champ, and Roth are the early favorites to meet in the title match, but Marylands Joe Guzzio (Greensboro, N.C.) and N.C. States Lee Carroll are always possible cinderellas.
For the Terps, a number of wrestlers have a chances to reach the finals--and qualify for the NCAA Tournament. Freshman Jake Stork (Mohrsville, Pa.), who has a team-high 12 falls on the year, is one of the leagues brightest newcomers. Another first-year wrestler, Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.), won three tournaments this season and finished the regular season at 22-4.
TERPS CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON WITH EMPHATIC WIN OVER ODU
In a gutsy team effort, Maryland came back from a deficit through six matches and won the final four duals to defeat Old Dominion, 25-13. After the Monarchs took a 4-0 lead in the opening match of the afternoon, freshman Sal Aquia (Baltimore, Md.) responded with an emotion-filled pin of Alex Plasencia in the final period at 165.
After Old Dominion won three of the next four matches, Joe Guzzio won a very tight 3-2 decision over Paul Jimenez at 125. Brandon York followed up with a major decision over Jimenezs brother, Paul, 12-4.
With only a three-point lead, Terp freshman Bryan Robinovitz (Belle Mead, N.J.) stepped onto the mat with a bandaged shoulder after injuring it against Howard on Friday night. After struggling during the first period, Robinovitz outmaneuvered Chris Blair for the 12-6 win. In the final match of the afternoon, captain Ted Harlan (Glenmore, Pa.) won by injury default after his opponent, Chad Filson, was unable to continue in the final period.
TERPS BUILD OFF OF MIDDLE WEIGHTS TO TOP BISON IN NON-CONFERENCE ACTION
Utilizing pins from both Joe Guzzio and Jake Stork, the Terrapins outlasted Howard, 25-16 on Feb. 19. By random draw, Howard heavyweight Adrian Thompson opened the dual meet and pinned Jule Dolci with only seven seconds left in the match. At 125 pounds, Guzzio manhandled Camilo Martinez throughout the first period, but repeatedly was pulled out of bounds in each fall situation, and finally pinned him at 3:37.
At 133, Brandon York gave the Terps their first lead of the night with a 13-6 decision over Derrick Butts, but the Bisons Henry Hilton responded with a major decision to get the lead back at 10-9.
After Ted Harlan shutout Kelly Miller, 4-0, at 141 pounds, Stork earned his team-leading 12th fall of the season against Jonathan Norris. Sal Aquia, added a critical major decision to give Maryland a commanding 12-point lead. Howard won two of the three finals decisions, but could not close the margin.
MARYLAND COACH JOHN McHUGH
Maryland's John McHugh (Maryland 59) is in his 21st season at the helm of the Terrapin wrestling program. During his tenure, he has twice been named ACC Coach of the Year (1990 and 1993) and received a Lifetime Service Award from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. As a Terp wrestler, McHugh was a two-time ACC champion and a three-time NCAA qualifier. In his time in College Park, McHugh has coached seven All-Americans and 19 ACC champions.
