TERPS FINISH SECOND AT MILLERSVILLE AS YORK, GUZZIO TAKE INDIVIDUAL CROWNS
Millersville, Pa.--Redshirt freshman Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) and sophomore Joe Guzzio (Greensboro, N.C.) each took first in their divisions as Maryland finished 13 points behind Binghamton (SUNY) at the Millersville Invitational to claim second in the team standings last Saturday. Also reaching the finals for Maryland were senior captain Ted Harlan (Glenmore, Pa.), at 149 pounds, and freshman Bryan Robinovitz (Belle Mead, N.J.), at 141, both of whom finished second. Other wrestlers who placed for the Terps included freshman Sal Aquia (Baltimore, Md.) and juniors Grant Newman (Chesapeake City, Md.) and Mike Tomaino (Allenhurst, N.J).
YORK RANKED 20TH NATIONALLY BY AMATEUR WRESTLING NEWS
Brandon York has entered the Amateur Wrestling News Top 20 after an impressive 12-1 start to his collegiate career. After winning the Coppin Open on Nov. 14, the Damascus High School graduate captured the prestigious Penn State Open on Dec. 6, becoming the first Terp since All-American Jim Guzzio (1995) to win the event.
MARYLAND HOSTS NAVY ON WEDNESDAY EVENING
Maryland hosts Navy this Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in Ritchie Coliseum. Last year, Navy came back to defeat the Terrapins 23-11 by winning the final three weights. Winners for the Terps included graduated seniors Shane Mack (142) and Jeff Whalen (150) and current wrestlers Ted Harlan (134) and Chad Masemer (167). The Midshipmen bring a very experienced team to College Park including 10th-ranked Greg Gingleskie (184) and 19th-ranked Justin Woodruff. Freshman Tyrone Neal (157) has also been a top performer this year.
HARLAN AND WEIDMAN EACH FINISH THIRD AT WILKES OPEN
Ted Harlan and sophomore Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.) both claimed third place at the Wilkes Open on Dec. 29. Other strong performances came from Sal Aquia and redshirt freshman Bill Moore (Silver Spring, Md.), each of whom won four matches during the two-day tournament.
MARYLAND COACH JOHN McHUGH
Marylands John McHugh (Maryland 59) is in his 21st season at the helm of the Terrapin wrestling program. During his tenure, he has twice been named ACC Coach of the Year (1990 and 1993) and received a Lifetime Service Award from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. As a Terp wrestler, McHugh was a two-time ACC champion and a three-time NCAA qualifier. In his time in College Park, McHugh has coached seven All-Americans and 19 ACC champions.
