COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland volleyball team, who made history last season after recording an undefeated regular-season record (25-0), begins preseason drills tomorrow. The team's first practice is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Ritchie Coliseum.
Maryland returns three starters from last year's 27-2 squad, including first team All-ACC selection Jaime Summers. Summers led the team in hitting with a .331 hitting percentage. The all-District III selection also ranked second on the team in kills with 425, and recorded career highs in every category, including a career-high 21 kills against Clemson.
"I really look for Jaime to have a fun senior year," said Maryland head coach Janice Kruger. She is a solid performer and a silent-but-deadly type of competitor. She leads by example rather than being too vocal. I look for her to really leave her mark on this program."
Also returning for her final year is senior Kim Adolphs, the top returning defensive gun for the Terps. Her 428 digs was second on the team, and she averaged 3.96 digs per game which ranked her among the ACC leaders. She, too, recorded career-highs last season, including a career-high 27 digs against Georgia Tech and 18 kills against Duke.
"Kim brings us the stability and the toughness this team needs. She has an aggressive attack and can really hurt a team by her tenacious style of defense," adds Kruger. "She is so mentally strong that she can adjust to about anything, and we will look to her as one of our go-to hitters."
Kruger welcomes five newcomers to the corps of returning letterwinners, including junior Beth Murphy who transferred from Duquesne, and freshmen Libby Alberts, Angie Banys, Judy Shen and Autumn Wilson.
Maryland begins its 1998 schedule on Friday, Sept. 4 at the Georgetown Invitational where the Terps will meet Big 10 power Michigan at noon. The Terps will then meet Temple at noon and Georgetown at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Maryland opens its 1998 home campaign on Sept. 1 when it hosts Villanova at 7 p.m. at Ritchie Coliseum.
Maryland will play host to this year's Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament which will be held Nov. 20-22 at Ritchie Coliseum.
