COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Sophomore field hockey midfielder Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) was selected for the U.S. Field Hockey Pan American Games team on Thursday. She joins former Terps Katie Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) and Chris DeBow (West Chester, Pa.), who were chosen for the national team on Jan. 9.
Tagliente has been a field hockey All-American the past two seasons. After earning third-team honors in 1997, she was named to the first team this past season. She was also named the ACC Rookie of the Year in 1997. On the international level, Tagliente was a member of the 1997 U.S. National Team, an alternate to the 1998 U.S. World Cup Team and had been an alternate to the 1999 U.S. National Team until her selection.
Kauffman earned her fourth consecutive selection to the U.S. National Team while DeBow made the squad for the third straight year. At Maryland, Kauffman was a two-time first-team All-America selection (1994 and 1996) and DeBow was a three-time first-team All-American (1995-97). Kauffman played on the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team, and both she and DeBow were members of last year's U.S. World Cup Team.
Next fall, Tagliente will lead a Maryland team seeking to win its second consecutive ACC title and qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive year. The Terps finished the 1998 season 16-6 and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for the second straight season.
The U.S. National Team will take part in the Pan American Games July 24-Aug. 8 in Winnipeg, Canada. The Pan American Games serve as a continental qualifier for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, with the champion advancing to the 10-team Olympic Tournament.
