Volleyball Inks Two Prepsters

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- The University of Maryland and head coach Janice Kruger announced today the signing of Amanda Ayres and Carey Brennan who have officially signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball at the University of Maryland next season.
Ayres, a 6-0 outside hitter and middle blocker from Chesapeake Beach, Md., is a two-sport athlete at Calvert High School in Prince Frederick, Md., playing both volleyball and participating in track and field. A four-year letterwinner in volleyball, Ayres was a first team All-Calvert County selection, a first team All-SMAC selection, a first team All-Southern Maryland selection and a first team All-Met selection this past season. She also earned all-county MVP honors, All-SMAC MVP honors and All-Southern Maryland MVP honors. She helped guide Calvert to the 1998 SMAC conference championship and the 1998 Maryland Class 3A state championship. Calvert was the top-ranked 3A team Ayres' entire senior year as selected by the Washington Post.
Brennan, a 5-10 outside hitter from Smithsburg, Md., is a two-sport athlete at Smithsburg High School, playing both volleyball and basketball. This past season, Brennan led Smithsburg to the Maryland Class 1A state championship and was named Washington County's Player of the Year as recognized by the Herald-Mail.
She just recently scored her 1,000th point as a prep hoopster.
"We are very fortunate to have two of the top players in the state of Maryland joining our program. Both Amanda and Carey are outstanding athletes and are a good fit for Maryland volleyball," said Kruger.
