TERPS RETURN HOME TO HOST UMBC Maryland returns home this Tuesday evening, hosting the UMBC Retrievers at 7 p.m. at Ritchie Coliseum. Maryland enters Tuesdays match with a 2-2 record while the Retrievers own a 3-2 record. Tuesdays meeting between the two schools marks the ninth time in school history. The last meeting between the two schools was on Sept. 14, 1993, when Maryland handed UMBC a 3-1 defeat. The Terps own a 8-0 advantage. Tuesdays match marks the next-to-last match in Ritchie in the month of September. The Terrapins dont play at home again until September 28, hosting American.
TERPS TRAVEL TO CITY OF BROTHERLY LOVE Following Tuesdays match against UMBC, Maryland travels to Philadelphia, Pa., to compete at the Temple Owls Apollo Classic this Friday and Saturday. Maryland first meets San Diego State on Friday at 5 p.m. Saturdays matchup could include either Temple or Drexel depending on Fridays winners and losers. Maryland just recently met Temple at last weekends Georgetown Invitational with the Owls escaping with a 3-2 win against the Terps.
MICHIGAN ENDS TERP STREAK Marylands 33-match regular-season winning streak was snapped last Friday after Michigan defeated the Terps, 3-1, at the Georgetown Invitational. It was the Terps first regular-season loss since their loss to Florida on October 18, 1996. The Wolverines won game one, 15-8, but the Terps came back in game two, grabbing a 15-13 win. The experienced Wolverine attack proved to be too much, however, for the young Terp squad, as they took the final two games, 15-8, 15-5, respectively.
MARYLAND BOUNCES BACK AFTER LOSS TO TEMPLE AND DEFEATS HOYAS Maryland bounced back after its five-game heartbreaking loss to Temple on Saturday afternoon, defeating Georgetown in five games. Freshman Katie Cramer led the Terp offense against Georgetown as she hit .379 after pounding down 13 kills on 29 swings. Junior outside hitter Kate Hannas hit. 345 and also recorded 13 kills.
ADOLPHS EARNS ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS Maryland senior outside hitter Kim Adolphs was named to the all-tournament team at the Georgetown Invitational. She averaged 3.00 kills per game and 4.56 digs per game, and hit. 211.
PICKING UP WHERE SHE LEFT OFF Maryland senior outside hitter Kim Adolphs continues to play tough, tenacious defense. Last season, Adolphs was second on the team in digs with 428 and helped the Terps to a No. 3 national ranking in defense. This past weekend, Adolphs was named to the all-tournament team at the Georgetown Invitational after posting double-digit digs in Marylands three matches, including a career-high 28 against Temple. Adolphs posted 17 digs against Michigan and followed-up her 28-dig performance against Temple with a 26-dig performance in the Terps 3-2 win against Georgetown. She has totaled a team-high 82 digs and is averaging 4.6 digs per game.
THE STREAK CONTINUES Maryland enters Tuesdays match at Ritchie Coliseum with an 18-match home win streak. The streak includes games played at both Cole Field House and Ritchie Coliseum. Maryland has not lost a home match since October 9, 1996, against George Mason.
NET NOTES Maryland is hitting .207 as a team ... freshman Katie Cramer leads all hitters with a .323 hitting percentage ... junior outside hitter Kate Hannas is hitting .282 which is second on the team ... Cramer leads the Terps at the net with 21 total blocks ... freshman setter Libby Alberts is averaging 9.9 assists per game ... senior outside hitter Kim Adolphs leads all Terps on defense with a 4.56 digs per game average.
CRAMER AND HANNAS TOUGH UP FRONT Maryland junior outside hitter Kate Hannas and freshman Katie Cramer are part of Marylands tall front line which is averaging 2.4 blocks per game. Cramer leads all Terps with 21 total blocks, including 10 block solos. Hannas has recorded five blocks solos and nine block assists.
ROAD WEARY Following their home match on Tuesday, against UMBC, the Terps hit the road for six consecutive matches, highlighted by a road journey to Colorado where the Terps will meet 12th-ranked Colorado and 39th-ranked Colorado State. Maryland opens its 1998 ACC schedule on Sept. 25 at Duke.
THE SCOOP ON SUMMERS Undoubtedly the focal point of the 1998 Maryland offense is senior middle hitter Jaime Summers (Lake Conneaut, Pa.). A first team All-ACC selection a year ago, Summers returns as the Terps top offensive threat, as she posted a .331 hitting percentage as a junior. The Pennsylvania native recorded career-bests in every category last year, including 21 kills and 18 digs against Clemson. She averaged 3.25 kills per game and 2.02 digs per game. Summers is hitting .263 this season and is tied for second on the team in blocks with 14.
FRESH FACES Maryland head coach Janice Kruger welcomes four newcomers to this years Terp squad. Included in the mix is junior transfer Beth Murphy (Duquesne). Freshmen Libby Alberts, Angie Banys and Judy Shen round out the list of newcomers.
KRUGERS COURT Terrapin head coach Janice Kruger (Nebraska 77) begins her 11th season at Maryland after being named ACC Coach of the Year last season, her third such honor. Kruger has guided the Terps to back-to-back undefeated regular-season ACC records, and to a perfect 25-0 regular-season record last year. She owns a 209-114 record at Maryland, and has a 581-216-6 career record in her 20 years. Kruger is the winningest active ACC coach and is ranked 11th among all coaches in winning percentage (.750).
TERPS TABBED SIXTH IN ACC POLL Maryland, which has posted back-to-back undefeated regular-season ACC records the last two seasons, is picked to finish sixth in the ACC this year as voted by the leagues nine head coaches. Florida State, which returns all six starters from last years second-place team, is picked to win the regular season. Clemson, the 1997 ACC Tournament champion, is picked second, with Georgia Tech and North Carolina tied for third. Duke, Virginia, Wake Forest and NC State are tabbed fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively.
TERPS ENTER YEAR TWO IN RITCHIE Last Tuesdays win over Villanova extended Marylands win streak at Ritchie Coliseum to 10 matches. The streak dates back to the Terps opening win against James Madison on Sept. 30, 1997. The Terps are only home three times in the month of September, and are on the road for nine matches, including the opening of their 1998 ACC schedule at Duke. Ritchie Coliseum serves as the host of this years ACC Championship Tournament, Nov. 20-22.
QUICK SET Gone from last years 27-2 squad is setter Eden Kroeger who left the program as the Terps all-time assist leader with 5,259 career assists. Maryland head coach Janice Kruger will have three options this year at the setter position--Katarina Bridova, last years backup setter; Libby Alberts, a freshman from Eden Prairie, Minn.; and Judy Shen, a local product from Rockville, Md.
