TERPS CLAIM APOLLO CLASSIC TITLE
Maryland avenged an earlier season loss to the Temple Owls and won the 1998 Temple Owls Apollo Classic, defeating San Diego State, 3-2, on Friday, and handing the host Owls a 3-2 defeat on Saturday. With the two wins, Maryland extended its winning streak to four straight. The streak dates back to Sept. 5 when the Terps defeated Georgetown, 3-2. In Fridays match, Maryland was led by senior middle hitter Jaime Summers who recorded 14 kills en route to hitting .300. Freshman Katie Cramer posted 12 blocks while senior Kim Adolphs totaled 25 digs to lead the Terps on defense. In the championship match against Temple, Maryland was led on offense by Cramers 14 kills and .591 hitting percentage. Summers hit .357 and had 13 kills.
THREE TERPS EARN APOLLO HONORS
Seniors Kim Adolphs and Jaime Summers and junior Beth Murphy were all named to the Temple Owls Apollo Classic all-tournament team, with Adolphs earning MVP honors. It marked the second consecutive week Adolphs has been named to an all-tournament team. She previously received all-tournament honors at the Georgetown Invitational.
TERPS TRAVEL WEST
Maryland faces its toughest test yet so far this season when it travels to Colorado for matchups with Colorado State on Friday and 12th-ranked Colorado on Saturday. The Rams of Colorado State own a 4-3 overall record while the Colorado Buffaloes are 3-1. The Buffaloes had won three straight prior to their 3-2 loss to Stanford. The Terps meeting with the Rams is their first, while Saturdays match against the Buffaloes marks the third meeting, with Colorado holding a 2-0 advantage.
MICHIGAN ENDS TERP STREAK
Marylands 33-match regular-season winning streak was snapped after Michigan defeated the Terps, 3-1, at the Georgetown Invitational on Sept. 4. It was the Terps first regular-season loss since their loss to Florida on October 18, 1996. The Wolverines won game one, 15-8, but the Terps came back in game two, grabbing a 15-13 win. The experienced Wolverine attack proved to be too much, however, for the young Terp squad, as they took the final two games, 15-8, 15-5, respectively.
PICKING UP WHERE SHE LEFT OFF
Maryland senior outside hitter Kim Adolphs continues to play tough, tenacious defense. Last season, Adolphs was second on the team in digs with 428 and helped the Terps to a No. 3 national ranking in defense. This past weekend, Adolphs was named MVP of the Temple Owls Apollo Classic after totaling 25 digs against San Diego State and 10 digs against Temple. She was also named to the all-tournament team at the Georgetown Invitational after posting double-digit digs in Marylands three matches, including a career-high 28 against Temple. Adolphs posted 17 digs against Michigan and followed-up her 28-dig performance against Temple with a 26-dig performance in the Terps 3-2 win against Georgetown. She has totaled a team-high 136 digs and is averaging 4.3 digs per game.
