COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore field hockey midfielder Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) has been named to the 1998-99 Women's GTE Academic All-America At-Large Team. Forty-five student-athletes representing all NCAA Division I women's teams that competed in the fall and winter seasons were selected to the GTE Academic All-America At-Large Team, based on both their academic and athletic accomplishments. The At-Large team included all women's sports except volleyball and basketball.
Tagliente is only one of two female student-athletes from the Atlantic Coast Conference to earn GTE Academic All-America honors, with the other being Jennifer Mihalik of Clemson. She is also one of only three field hockey players, along with Heather Haigh of Drexel and Cortney Cutchall of Virginia Commonwealth, to earn such honors.
On the playing field, Tagliente has been a field hockey All-American the past two seasons. After earning third-team honors in 1997, she was named to the first team this past season. She was also named the ACC Rookie of the Year in 1997. On the international level, Tagliente was a member of the 1997 U.S. National Team, an alternate to the 1998 U.S. World Cup Team and is currently an alternate to the 1999 U.S. National Team.
In the classroom, Tagliente has been named to the Dean's List each semester she has been at Maryland. She was also named to the 1997-98 ACC Honor Roll and the 1998 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squad.
Next fall, Tagliente will lead a Maryland team seeking to win its second consecutive ACC title and qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive year. The Terps finished the 1998 season 16-6 and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for the second straight season.
