LINCOLN, Neb. - The No. 24 University of Maryland women's gymnastics team recorded an all-time high team score of 195.200, breaking the old mark set on Feb. 13, and recorded season-highs on vault (48.500), bars (48.950) and floor (48.975) to finish in third place at the 10th Annual Masters Classic. Host No. 7 Nebraska took the top spot with a score of 195.725, No. 8 Arizona State came in second with a score of 195.250 and California finished in fourth place with a score of 188.850. This meet marked just the fourth meeting between the Terps and both Nebraska and Arizona State, while it was just the second meeting for the Terps against California. The win over the Golden Bears is the first in Maryland history.
In the all-around competition the Terps took the top three places with outstanding performances from freshmen Gillian Cote (Fredericksburg, Va./James Monroe) and Laura Moon (Scottsdale, Ariz./Saguaro) and junior co-captain Christine Holcombe (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township).
Cote, as she has done all season, put on an amazing display, taking first place in the all-around competition, first place on floor and tying for first place on bars. Her score of 39.175 in the all-around marked the third best of her career and the third time in the past four meets that she has recorded a score of 39.175 or better in the all-around competition. It is also the sixth best score in Maryland history. Cote also scored a 9.9 on floor for first place, tying a career-high and the team season-high, which she also set in Maryland's last meet on Feb. 26 against Towson. This also ties her for the best score in Maryland history on floor. Cote's score of 9.9 on bars tied her for first place with Laurie McLaughlin of Nebraska and marked the highest bars score in Maryland history. It also set a career-high and team season-high.
Moon, who has been performing at an amazing level in the past several meets, kept it up with a second place finish in the all-around, scoring a 39.125. This is the fourth highest all-around score of her career and the fourth time in the past four meets that Moon has recorded a score of 39.125 or better in the all-around competition. Included in this was a career-high score of 9.850 on bars, placing her in a tie for fifth place overall.
Holcombe recorded her best outing of the season, scoring a season-high 38.900 in the all-around, finishing in third place overall. Included in her performance was a 9.775 on bars, tying a career-high and placing her in a tie for 11th place. Holcombe also recorded the second best beam score of her career, a 9.7, to finish in a tie for 11th place and also scored a season-high 9.775 on floor, earning her a tie for 12th place overall.
The Terps also received another strong performance on beam from freshman Kit Johnson (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem), who finished in a three-way tie for second place with a score of 9.9. This score marks a career-high on beam for Johnson and ties the second highest beam score in school history.
The Terps (12-7, 3-3 EAGL) will be in action again on Saturday, March 6 at 7 p.m. when they travel to Raleigh, N.C. to compete in the Wolfpack Invitational. The meet will feature EAGL rival host NC State as well as Pennsylvania, Radford and William & Mary. The Terps have faced all four opponents once during the 1999 season and have compiled a record of 3-1, losing only to NC State at the 4th Annual Governor's Cup on Feb. 7 which was also held in Raleigh, N.C.
