COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior forward Meredith Thorpe scored twice, leading Virginia (17-4) to a 4-2 win over Kent (18-5) today in the first round of the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament. The Cavaliers will take on host Maryland tomorrow at 2 p.m. in a rematch of last week's ACC championship game.
Thorpe, the ACC's all-time leader in goals and points, now has 101 goals for her collegiate career. She scored both of her goals against Kent in the second half.
The Cavaliers scored twice within 70 seconds in the first half to take a 2-0 halftime lead. Senior midfielder Michelle Vissuzo scored off a pass from junior midfielder Laura Lindsay with 12:00 left to go in the first half. Sophomore forward Lorraine Vissuzo then scored off a rebound with 10:50 remaining before the half.
Freshman midfielder Marjolijn Klooster and sophomore midfielder Elsbeth Versterre scored goals for the Golden Flashes in the second half.
