COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland senior middle hitter Jaime Summers hit a team-high .375 and senior outside hitter Kim Adolphs totaled a team-high 20 kills to lead the Terps to a 3-1 win against the UMBC Retrievers on Tuesday evening at Ritchie Coliseum. Maryland jumped to a 15-10 game one win before UMBC would counter back and win game two, 16-14. Maryland would survive a strong Retriever attack and win games three and four, 15-13, 15-12, respectively.
The Terps fell behind early in game one as they saw the Retrievers take an early 7-1 lead. They were able to rally back behind the outstanding play at the net. Maryland totaled 20 blocks, including a team-high six by Summers. Junior Kate Hannas and freshman Katie Cramer each totaled five blocks, including a team-high four block solos.
In a grueling four-game set, Maryland only hit .214 as a team compared to the .166 by the Retrievers. The Retrievers played a stingy style of defense, posting 98 digs, including a team-high 21 by Muge Pars. Defensively for the Terps, Adolphs totaled 19 digs.
The 21 kills of Lisa Cline who also hit a team-high .378 led UMBC.
Maryland travels to Philadelphia this weekend to play at the Temple Owls Apollo Classic where the Terps will first meet San Diego State on Friday at 5 p.m. On Saturday, Maryland meets either Drexel or Temple depending on the outcome of Fridays matches.
Maryland improved to 3-2 overall while UMBC fell to 3-3.
