Four Field Hockey Players to Compete on U.S. Under-20 Team

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Juniors Lindsay Gorewitz (Rockville, Md.), Molly Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) and Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) and sophomore Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.) will travel with the U.S. Under-20 field hockey team to Canada for a five-game series against the Canadian Under-20 team July 20-28. The first game is slated for July 20 in Brandon, Manitoba.
The series against Canada concludes the 1999 schedule for the U.S. Under-20 team. After starting the year by touring Argentina in March, the team competed in a Four Nation Tournament which was held in Union, N.J., against England, India and Chile in Union, N.J. The U.S. squad finished third behind India and England.
Smith, a 1998 second-team All-American and All-ACC pick, and Kauffman, a 1998 Mid Atlantic Region All-American, have been the U.S. Under-20 team captains this season.
Six players from Maryland have played on the U.S. Under-20 team at various times this year. In addition to the four players traveling to Canada, sophomore Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.) and incoming freshman Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) have also been on the squad.
Maryland, which won the ACC title last season, begins its 1999 campaign Aug. 29 by hosting Virginia Commonwealth at 1 p.m.
