WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Former Maryland field hockey standouts Kate Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) and Christine DeBow (West Chester, Pa.) were in the starting lineup as the U.S. National Team won its opening contest at the 1999 Pan Am Games, defeating Trinidad and Tobago 2-0. Current Maryland junior Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.), who is the youngest member of the U.S. National Team, also saw action as a reserve.
The U.S. scored both of its goals in the first eleven minutes of the contest. Kelli James scored six minutes into the game and Kate Barber scored five minutes later.
The Pan Am Games marks the fourth consecutive year Kauffman has played on the U.S. National team and the third straight year DeBow has been on the squad. Tagliente was on the 1997 U.S. National Team and was a reserve last season.
Next up for the U.S. team is a key game against host Canada on Tuesday at 1 p.m. MST.
