WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Former Maryland field hockey standouts Kate Kauffman
(West Lawn, Pa.) and Christine DeBow (West Chester, Pa.) were in the
starting lineup once again for the U.S. National Team in its game
against Argentina on Thursday. After winning their first two contests
at the 1999 Pan Am Games, however, the Americans suffered a 2-1 loss,
dropping their record to 2-1. Current Maryland junior Carla Tagliente
(Cortland, N.Y.), who is the youngest member of the U.S. National Team,
also saw action as a reserve.
After a scoreless first half, Karina Masotta put Argentina on the board
five minutes into the second half. The Americans got the equalizer with
eight minutes to go on a goal by Kelli James. Five minutes later,
Cecilia Rognoni converted a penalty corner to give Argentina the lead
for good.
The 1999 Pan Am Games mark the fourth consecutive year Kauffman has
played on the U.S. National team and the third straight year DeBow has
been on the squad. Tagliente was on the 1997 U.S. National Team and was
a reserve last season.
Up next for the U.S. National Team is a Friday contest against Cuba,
starting a 6 p.m. MST.
