Three Terps Start in U.S. Field Hockey Win over Mexico

Aug. 1, 1999

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Former Maryland field hockey standouts Kate Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) and Christine DeBow (West Chester, Pa.) and current junior Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) were all in the starting lineup as the U.S. National Field Hockey Team defeated Mexico 3-0 on Sunday at the Pam Am Games.

Cindy Werley scored the lone goal of the first half at the 27-minute mark. In the second half, Kelli James scored with eight minutes remaining and Antoinette Lucas added an insurance goal four minutes later.

The 1999 Pan Am Games marks the fourth consecutive year Kauffman has played on the U.S. National team and the third straight year DeBow has been on the squad. Tagliente was on the 1997 U.S. National Team and was a reserve last season.

The Americans (4-1) take on Chile tonight at 8 p.m. MST needing either a win or a tie to advance to Wednesday's gold medal game against Argentina (5-0). The winner of Wednesday's gold medal game will earn a spot in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
