COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A record 162 University of Maryland student-athletes have been named to the 1998-99 Atlantic Coast Conference Honor for the 1998-99 school year as announced by ACC Commissioner John Swofford.
The record 162 student-athletes on the list marks an increase of 13 from last year and is nine more than the previous school-record of 153 which was established during the 1995-96 academic year. The number of Terrapin student-athletes included on the list has steadily increased during the tenure of athletic director Deborah Yow. Having just completed her fifth academic year in College Park, the total number of student-athletes on the ACC Honor Roll has increased by 30 percent since 1994-95.
"The academic success of the record 162 student-athletes named to the ACC Honor Roll is a special achievement," said Yow. "We are pleased about the success achieved by out student-athletes in the classroom and the balance that they are able to achieve both as students and athletes. The credit for this achievement belongs to the staff of the Academic Support Unit, the resolve of the student-athletes and the support of their coaches and sport administrators."
Featured on this year's honor roll are several standouts, including nine student-athletes who earned athletic All-America honors in their respective sport. That list includes Jen Adams (women's lacrosse), Kelly Bowman (women's swimming), Quinn Carney (women's lacrosse), Candyce DeLoatch (women's track), Katy Novotny (women's swimming), Kim Piotro (women's swimming), Jen Pratt (field hockey), Keri Sarver (women's soccer) and Carla Tagliente (field hockey). Tagliente, who captained the field hockey team to the 1998 ACC championship, was a second-team Academic All-American honoree by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Sarver was a three-time Academic Honor Roll selection during her career and earned a Weaver-James-Corrigan post-graduate scholarship award from the ACC.
Also included on the list of student-athletes were nine members of the women's gymnastics team (Shannon Buckley, Elize Burke, Gillian Cote, Denise Driscoll, Jennifer Engel, Karyn Fein, Shelly Hernandez, Alyssa Mealey, Lisa Mealey), eight members of the national champion women's lacrosse team (Adams, Carney, Tara Foran, Annie Morris, Kerri Mulligan, Rebecca Shank, Wendy VanNorden, and Debra Wheat), six members of the national semifinalist men's soccer team (Nathan Bernard, Jamie Eichmann, Beckett Hollenbach, Christian Lewis, Kirk Miller, Tyler Pharr and Pierre Venditti) and two members of the men's basketball team which advanced to the "Sweet 16" of the NCAA Tournament (Matt Hahn and Mike Mardesich). The women's gymnastics team was ranked as high as eighth in the nation and participated in the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season.
