WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Former Maryland field hockey standouts Kate Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) and Christine DeBow (West Chester, Pa.) were in the starting lineup as the U.S. National Team defeated Chile 2-0 on Monday at the Pan Am Games. Current Maryland junior Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.), who is the youngest member of the U.S. National Team, also saw action as a reserve.
With the victory over Chile, the Americans (5-1) advance to the gold medal game on Wednesday at 4 p.m. MST against defending champion Argentina (6-0). The winner of Wednesday's game will qualify for next year's Olympic Games in Sydney Australia.
After a scoreless first half, the United States got on the board five minutes into the second half on a goal by Kate Barber. Nine minutes later, Kris Fillat extended the lead to 2-0.
The 1999 Pan Am Games mark the fourth consecutive year Kauffman has played on the U.S. National team and the third straight year DeBow has been on the squad. Tagliente was on the 1997 U.S. National Team and was a reserve last season.
