
No. 1 Terps Win Season Opener; Prepare For Busy Week

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland field hockey team (1-0, 0-0 ACC) plays three games this week including one of the most important college field hockey games of the early season as the Terps travel to play No. 2 Old Dominion on Sept. 4 in Norfolk, Va.
The Terps play host to American on Aug. 31 and travel to play Richmond on Sept. 5 in addition to their game against the Monarchs.
Maryland won its season-opener for the third consecutive season and 21st time in school history on Aug. 29 as the Terps defeated Virginia Commonwealth, 13-0.
Maryland Ranked No. 1
The Maryland field hockey team is ranked No. 1 in the Sports
Illustrated for Women preseason Top 10. The Terps are ranked ahead of
No. 2 Old Dominion, the defending national champion, and ACC nemesis
North Carolina, which begins the season ranked No. 3.
Maryland is scheduled to face four of the teams ranked in the preseason Top 10. In addition to Old Dominion and North Carolina, the Terps will travel to play No. 5 James Madison (Oct. 5) and play host to Virginia (Oct. 2).
Nine Terps Named to ACC Honor Roll
Nine field hockey players, including five members of this year's team,
were among 162 Terp student athletes recently named to the ACC Academic
Honor Roll.
The ACC Honor Roll is comprised of those student athletes who recorded a grade point average of 3.0 or better for the full 1998-99 academic year.
The current members of the team who were named to the honor roll are: Carol Senkler (Hockessin, Del.), Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.), Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany), Emily Ward (Ellicott City, Md.) and Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.).
Terps Establish Two School Records in Opener
Maryland established school-records for most goals in a game and
largest margin of victory in its 13-0 win over Virginia Commonwealth on
Aug. 29.
The previous record for goals in a game and for margin of victory came during a 12-0 win over Towson on Oct. 16, 1980.
Juniors Stay Perfect in Season Openers
Maryland's junior class ran its opening day winning-streak to three
games as the Terps defeated Virginia Commonwealth on Aug. 29.
Maryland's junior class of Lindsay Gorewitz (Rockville, Md.), Molly Kaufman (West Lawn, Pa.), Sarah Rappolt (West Chester, Pa.), Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) and Carla Tagliente are 3-0 in season openers and have outscored their opponents, 28-0.
The Numbers On the Startling Lineup
Maryland's opening day starting lineup included five juniors, five
sophomores and one senior. The junior class totaled 13 points (five
goals and three assists while the sophomore class totaled 11 points
(four goals and three assists).
Goalie Zoe Ehrlich (Montclair, N.J.), the only senior in the starting lineup made one save and allowed no goals in her fourth career start.
Emily Ward (Ellicott City, Md.), the only other senior on the roster, played as a reserve against VCU and scored one goal.
Angie Klingerman (Bel Air, Md.) and Carli Harris (Westminster, Md.), a pair of redshirt freshmen, combined for seven points (three goals and one assist).
Hiskins Ties Career Mark
Junior Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia) scored a single-game
career-high two goals in Maryland's season-opening victory against
Virginia Commonwealth. Her two goals matched her total goal scoring
output from last season in 22 games.
Hiskins also added one assist to bring her point scoring total to five after only one game of the 1999 season. She totaled two goals and two assists for four total points as a sophomore.
Tagliente Nears Top 10
Junior Carla Tagliente moved to within one point of Maryland's all-time
top 10 in total points. The two-time All-America was credited with one
assist against VCU to bring her career points total to 85 (36 goals and
13 assists).
Two-time All-ACC selection Cheryl Rudio (1985-88) is ranked 10th all-time with 86 total points.

Smith Nets First Hat Trick
Junior co-captain Keli Smith recorded her first career hat-trick
against Virginia Commonwealth on Aug. 29. Smith scored the first goal
of the season for the Terps with just over 10 minutes elapsed in the
game. The goal marked her first game-winning goal of the season and the
fourth of her career.
Walter Scores Three in Opener
Sophomore Caroline Walter recorded her second career hat trick as she
found the back of the cage three times against Virginia Commonwealth.
The forward added one assist for a team-leading and career-high seven
total points.
Walter's first career hat trick came in a 5-1 victory over Penn on Oct. 20, 1998.
She has now scored 12 goals and added 13 assists for 37 total points in only 23 career games.
Klingerman Scores Hat Trick
Redshirt freshman Angie Klingerman scored three goals in her first
career game as Maryland defeated Virginia Commonwealth.
Klingerman, who redshirted the 1998 season, scored her first career goal with six minutes elapsed in the second half. She added her second goal five minutes later and added her third to give the Terps a 9-0 second-half lead.
Senkler in Goal Column
Sophomore Carol Senkler recorded her first goal of the season and the
second of her career against VCU. Senkler was one of five sophomores in
the starting lineup and scored Maryland's 12th goal of the game.
Zoe The Goalie
Senior Zoe Ehrlich, who played 55 minutes and allowed zero goals
against VCU, shared her 10th career shutout as the Terps blanked the
Rams.
Ehrlich recorded one save and was lifted for sophomore Jackie Reilly (Suffern, N.Y.) with 15 minutes remaining in the game.
Reilly, who joined the Terps as a walk-on during the 1998 season earned playing time for the first time during her career in the victory. Reilly also recorded one save, the first of her career.
First Time Players
Five players, including one true freshman, made their career debuts
against Virginia Commonwealth. Sophomores Kristy Palchinsky
(Leonardtown, Md.) and Jackie Reilly, redshirt freshmen Angie Klingerman
and Carli Harris (Westminster, Md.) and true freshmen Carissa Messimer
(Mountaintop, Pa.) all saw action for the first time in the victory.
Klingerman scored three goals, Messimer added one assist and Reilly added one save in 15 minutes in the cage.
Rizzo Gets Into the Act
Sophomore Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.) was credited with one assist in
Maryland's victory over VCU. It was the second of her career and tied
her single-season career high.
Her first career assist (the lone assist of her freshman season) came against Towson on Sept. 16, 1998.
Welsh Adds Assist
Sophomore Autumn Welsh (Allentown, Pa.) was credited with her first
assist of the season on Maryland's first goal of the season against
VCU. She assisted Keli Smith on the game-winning goal with 10:50
elapsed in the first half against the Rams.
Meharg in Season Openers
Head coach Missy Meharg upped her opening day record to 9-3 (.750) as
the Terps defeated VCU on Aug. 29. The wins was the 165th of her career
and gave her a 165-67-9 career record (.701).

22 - Maryland has a 22-0-0 all-time record against American. The Terps' 22 victories is tied for the most against all opponents. Maryland also holds a 22-0-0 record against Towson.
23 - Junior Molly Kauffman has started 23 consecutive games. She started every game of the 1998 season and was an opening-day starter against Virginia Commonwealth.
45 - Juniors Keli Smith and Carla Tagliente have started 45 consecutive games during their careers. The pair has started every game the Terps have played since their arrival as freshmen.
50 - Maryland's two seniors -- Emily Ward and Zoe Ehrlich -- have helped lead Maryland to a 50-17-0 record (.746) record during their four-year careers.
165 - Head coach Missy Meharg is the winningest coach in school history with a 165-67-9 (.703) record. She has recorded 11 consecutive winning seasons.
