WINNEPEG, Manitoba-Despite a goal from Maryland junior Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.), the U.S. Field Hockey Team was defeated by Argentina 5-2 in the gold medal contest at the Pan Am Games tonight. Tagliente was one of three Maryland players to see action against Argentina, as former Terp Kate Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) was in the starting lineup and another former Terp, Christine DeBow (West Chester, Pa.), was a reserve.
Tagliente's goal, which came as time expired in the first half, deadlocked the game at 2-2. It was her second goal of the Pan Am Games. Argentina, however, scored three unanswered goals in the second half to win the gold medal and earn an automatic bid to the 2000 Olympics, which will be held in Sydney, Australia. Cindy Werley scored the Americans' other goal in the first half.
The U.S. National Team has one final chance to qualify for the Olympics, when it travels to Milton Keynes, England for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament March 23-April 2.
The 1999 Pan Am Games marked the fourth consecutive year Kauffman has played on the U.S. National team and the third straight year DeBow has been on the squad. Tagliente was on the 1997 U.S. National Team and was a reserve last season.
Tagliente now returns to Maryland for the 1999 NCAA field hockey season, which the Terps open up on August 29 with a home game against Virginia Commonwealth University at 1 p.m. Maryland is the defending ACC champion and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals last season.
