MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Maryland women's golf team, competing in its first ever tournament event, shot a 337 (+49) on Friday in the first round of the Unlimited Potential/Baytree Classic at the Baytree Plantation Golf Club here Friday. The low scorer for the Terps was freshman Jennifer Gibson who shot an 81 (+9) on the par 72 course. She is currently tied for 64th place.
The event is the first ever for the Terrapin women's golf program, which became the 25th sport at the University of Maryland and the 13th for female student-athletes in 1998.
Other Terp performances on Friday saw freshman Brooke Bendler shoot 84, freshman Carter Crowther 85, freshman Erin Clasper 87 and junior Sarah Bedford, 91.
Two-time Maryland men's captain Jason Rodenhaver was named as the first head coach in the program's history on Nov. 18, 1998. It was then, less than one year ago, that he began the task of building the brand new program that played its first event today.
Rodenhaver was a member of the Maryland golf team that participated in the NCAA East Regional in 1994. Rodenhaver had helped coached with the Terrapin men's program since 1995. He was the tournament director of the State Farm Collegiate Players Tour, held at the University of Maryland Golf Course, from 1994 to 1997.
