COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's golf team, fresh from competing in its first-ever tournament, travels to Flagstaff, Ariz., to participate in the Northern Arizona Invitational on Sept. 20-21. The Terps will play at the 6,156 yard, par 72 Aspen Valley Country Club. The Terps competed in their first-ever event Sept. 10-12 at the Unlimited Potential/Baytree Classic at the Baytree Plantation Golf Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Women's golf became the 25th sport at the University of Maryland and the 13th for female student-athletes in 1998.
Competition in the First Ever Event
Junior Sarah Bedford (Gaithersburg, Md.) improved her score by five
strokes and her overall place by eight positions as the Maryland women's
golf team finished competition in the Unlimited Potential/Baytree
Classic at the Baytree Plantation Golf Club on Sept. 12. Bedford shot a
personal tournament low 83 as she showed improvement over the course of
the three-day tournament. She improved her overall score by eight
strokes from day one to day three.
The event was the first ever for the Terp women's golf program that was established in 1998.
The Terps had at least three players shoot in the 80's during each day of the three-day event. Maryland was led by Bedford (83), freshman Jennifer Gibson (Havertown, Pa.) (84) and freshman Brooke Bendler (Salisbury, Md.) (89).
Gibson was the most consistent Terp as she shot an 81+81+84 (246) during the three-day event. Bendler also displayed a great deal of consistency as she shot 84+77+89 (250) in her first collegiate event. Bendler shot a team-low 77 during round two.

The Maryland women's golf team will compete in four tournaments during
the 1999 fall season. The team competed in the Unlimited

Quoting Jason Rodenhaver
"I was pleasantly surprised with our performance in our first event. It
was a great learning experience and that is one thing that is very
important to me as the coach. We are definitely looking for improvement
in our second tournament in Arizona."
"I was very happy with the performance of freshman Jennifer Gibson. She played consistently throughout the entire tournament and will continue to get better. I was very encouraged by her play. "
"I also felt like our freshman handled the pressure of their first tournament very well. It is a lot to ask of four freshmen to play for their school in their first career tournament."
