
Walter And Sanders Named Student-Athletes Of The Week

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore Caroline Walter (Reiligen, Germany), a forward on the field hockey team and junior Lewis Sanders (Staten Island, N.Y.), a defensive back on the football team, have been chosen as the student-athletes of the week by the University of Maryland department of athletics for the week of Sept. 6-12.
Walter, who has scored a career-high 11 goals this season, scored five goals last week as the Terps won two games. She scored her second career hat trick in the Terps' 6-3 victory over Boston University and added two more as Maryland defeated Massachusetts, 7-0. Walter's 11 goals and 24 total points lead the Terps who have a record of 4-1.
Walter, who scored nine goals as a freshman in 1998, is currently tied for first in the ACC in total points.
Sanders, who leads the NCAA in kickoff returns average (48.7), returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown in the Terps' 51-10 victory over Western Carolina on Saturday. He totaled 120 yards on two kickoff returns. His return for a touchdown was the second of his career, tying the school record. He also had his second interception of the season in addition to totaling four tackles and a pass breakup.
Sanders missed the entire 1998 season with a shoulder injury. He currently leads the ACC in kickoff returns and ranks second in interceptions.
Sanders and Walter both earned Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week honors in their respective sports.
