
Terps Play Host To Towson, Georgetown, Ball State

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland field hockey team (4-1, 0-0 ACC) plays host to Towson University (Sept. 15, 7,30 p.m.) and the fourth annual Terrapin Invitational (Sept. 18-19, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.) as it continues its season. The Terps have never lost to Towson in 22 previous meetings and are the three-time defending champions of the Terrapin Invitational. Maryland is undefeated in six previous games of the first three tournaments. Maryland will play host to Georgetown at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Ball State at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Ball State will play American at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Georgetown at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Maryland upped its record to 4-1 with victories over Boston University (6-3) and Massachusetts (7-0) last week.
Tagliente Continues Climb, Now In Eighth Place
Junior Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) scored one goal and recorded three assists last week to bring her career point total to 93. Her five total points last week moved her from 10th place into sole possession of eighth place on Maryland's all-time scoring list. She moves past Lynn Frame (1979-82) and Cheryl Rudio (1989-92) who had been tied for eighth with 91 career points. Tagliente needs only seven points to become only the seventh player in school history to accumulate 100 or more career points.

Tagliente Ties Single-Season Career-High
Junior Carla Tagliente recorded two assists in Maryland's pair of victories last week to bring her 1999 season total to seven and her career total to 19. Her seven assists this season ties her single-season career-high which she recorded in 1998, while her 19 career assists moves her into 10th place on Maryland's career list.
Terrapin Invitational History
Maryland enters this weekend's Terrapin Invitational as the three-time defending champion of the event. The Terps won the crown during the 1995, 1996 and 1997 seasons. Maryland is 2-0 in Terrapin Invitational Tournament play against Georgetown, with Terp victories coming in 1996 (8-0) and 1997 (10-0). The Terps defeated both American (2-0) and Massachusetts (3-0) to win the championship in 1998. In six games played during the tournament's history, Maryland has allowed only two goals.

Walter On a Goal Scoring Roll
Sophomore Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) scored five goals last week, including her second career hat trick, to lead the Terps to a 6-3 victory over Boston University. She added two goals against Massachusetts as the Terps defeated the Minutewomen, 7-0. Walter is the Terps leader in goals scored (11) and total points (13) through the first five games of the season. Walter scored nine goals and added 13 assists last season for a career-high 31 total points.
Hohnstine Gains First Terp Start
Sophomore goalie Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) earned playing time in both of Maryland's victories last week. She played the entire second half against Boston University and recorded three saves without allowing a goal. Hohnstine was the starter against Massachusetts and did not allow a goal on just over 43 minutes played. Hohnstine transferred from American University just before the beginning of the season.
Tagliente Finds The Cage
Junior Carla Tagliente scored her first goal of the 1999 season in Maryland's 7-0 victory over Massachusetts. She has now scored 37 career goals which ranks as the seventh-highest total in school history. Maryland was not without Tagliente's talent through the first four games of the season as she had accumulated a team-leading seven assists before scoring her first goal of the season.
Rizzo Returns Home
Sophomore Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.) returned to her home state of Massachusetts last week and enjoyed a fine homecoming. Rizzo scored her second goal of the season against Massachusetts and was credited with a defensive save in Maryland's victory over Boston University. Rizzo has recorded a career-high two assists this season.
Hiskins Scores Pair Vs. UMass
Junior Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia) scored two goals against Massachusetts including what proved to be the game-winner early in the first half. Her two goals last week to bring her 1999 total to a single-season career-high five. Hiskins' two goals against Virginia Commonwealth in the season opener and against Massachusetts are as many goals as she scored in 22 games during the 1998 season.
Smith Continues Solid Play
Junior Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal against Boston University in Maryland's 6-3 victory on Sept. 10. The game-winner was Smith's second of the season and gave her five for her career. She has five goals this season and 22 for her career. Smith is a team tri-captain this season and was an All-America second team selection in 1998.
Harris With First Career Assist
Redshirt freshman Carli Harris (Westminster, Md.) recorded her first career point against Massachusetts. She was credited with an assist on Maryland's seventh goal of the game. Harris has played in four of Maryland's five games this season.
Senkler Gets Into The Act
Sophomore Carol Senkler (Hockessin, Del.) recorded her first assist of the season against Massachusetts. She was credited with an assist on Maryland's fifth goal of the game which was scored by Dina Rizzo. It was the second assist of her career with her first coming against James Madison on Oct. 25, 1998. Maryland is 2-0 when Senkler records an assist during her career.
Klingerman In Scoring Column
Redshirt freshman Angie Klingerman (Bloomsburg, Pa.) scored her fifth goal of the season in the Terps' victory over Massachusetts. She has now scored five goals this season which includes her first career hat trick against Virginia Commonwealth on Aug. 29. Klingerman is tied for second on the team with five goals and ranks fourth with 10 points.
Welsh With Career-High Points
Sophomore Autumn Welsh (Allentown, Pa.) recorded three assists last week as Maryland was victorious in both of its outings. She recorded her single-game career-high of two assists against Boston University and currently totals a single-season career-high six assists this season. Welsh's career-high eight total points this season in five games is three points more than she recorded in 21 games played during the 1998 season.
Palchinsky Scores First Goal
Sophomore Kristy Palchinsky (Leonardtown, Md.) scored her first career goal against Boston University on Sept. 10. She scored Maryland's fifth goal of the game in the 6-3 victory. Palchinsky has started more games this season (two) than she did as a freshman (zero) and has played in nearly as many games in 1999 (five) as she did during the 1998 season (six).
Rappolt Adds Goal To Victory
Junior Sarah Rappolt (West Chester, Pa.) scored her first goal of the 1999 season against Massachusetts. She has now scored three goals during her career. Rappolt is one of five players not currently in the starting lineup who has played in all five games so far this season.

Head coach Missy Meharg has a career record of 169-68-9 for a career winning percentage of .705.
