Field Hockey Hosts Delaware, Starts ACC Slate With Wake Forest

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland field hockey team (7-1, 0-0 ACC), which won three games last week including the championship of the fourth annual Terrapin Invitational Tournament, plays host to Delaware and Wake Forest this week. Maryland has won five consecutive games and is ranked No. 4 in the most recent poll by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). The Terps' game against No. 20 Delaware marks its fifth against a Top 20 team while the game against No. 9 Wake Forest marks the second Top 10 ranked team the Terps will have faced during the month of September.

Meharg's History At Delaware
Head coach Missy Meharg enjoys a sort of homecoming this week as the Terps play host to Delaware on Sept. 21. She played for the Blue Hens from 1981-84, was a two-time All-America forward in field hockey and helped the Blue Hens win the 1982 NCAA lacrosse title. Meharg was nominated for the Honda Broderick Award as college field hockey's top player during her senior season. She graduated from Delaware in 1985 with a degree in health and physical education.
Terps In The Atlantic Coast Conference
Maryland begins its ACC championship title defense as it plays host to Wake Forest on Sept. 25. The Terps won the ACC tournament last season after finishing second in the league standings with a 3-1 record. Beginning with its game against Wake Forest, the Terps play three consecutive ACC games (Sept. 29 at Duke and Oct. 2 against Virginia). Maryland has a 9-1 all-time record against Wake Forest.
Tagliente Continues Climb
Junior Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) moved into seventh place on Maryland's all-time scoring list and became only the seventh player in school history to scored 100 or more total career points last week. She recorded a career-high eight total points (three goals and two assists) against Towson on Sept. 15 and recorded one assist in Maryland's 7-2 victory over Ball State on Sept. 19.

Four Terps Named To All-Tournament Team
Juniors Lindsay Gorewitz (Rockville, Md.), Molly Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.), Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia) and sophomore Kristy Palchinsky (Leonardtown, Md.) were named to the Terrapin Field Hockey Invitational all-tournament team. Gorewitz and Kauffman led the Maryland defensive charge that held two opponents to a total of three goals. During Sunday's championship game the pair limited Ball State's Sally Northcroft to two goals on two shots. Northcroft was held without a shot in the second half. She had scored a school-record seven goals in the Cardinals victory over American on Saturday. Palchinsky and Hiskins led the Terps' offensive charge which netted 20 goals and 21 assists for 61 total points in two games. Palchinsky scored the game-winning goal against Ball State and totaled three goals during the two-day affair. Hiskins totaled two goals and five assists for nine total points.
Gorewitz Records First Point
Junior Lindsay Gorewitz recorded her first career point in Maryland's victory over Towson on Sept. 15. She assisted Carissa Messimer on Maryland's fifth goal in the Terps 10-1 victory.
Terrapin Invitational Recap
Maryland claimed last week's Terrapin Invitational tournament championship with two victories: 13-1 over Georgetown on Sept. 18 and 7-2 over Ball State on Sept. 19. Maryland has claimed four consecutive Terrapin Invitational tournament championships and has a perfect record of 8-0 in the history of the invitational.
Messimer With a Double Trick
Freshman Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) scored six goals and added one assist last week as Maryland won three games. She recorded hat tricks in consecutive games against Towson and Georgetown and totaled 13 points during the week. Messimer has scored eight goals and added two assists for 18 total points in her first season with the Terps. She is currently tied for fourth on the team in scoring.
Klingerman Scores Four Redshirt freshman Angie Klingerman (Bloomsburg, Pa.) scored a career-high four goals against Georgetown in the Terps' 13-1 victory in the first round of the Terrapin Invitational. It marked her second career hat trick. She has now scored nine goals this season. Klingerman's nine goals rank as the second highest total for the Terps this season, behind only Caroline Walter's (Reilingen, Germany) 14 goals.
Hiskins Ties School Record
Junior Rachel Hiskins tied a school-record with four assists against Towson in Maryland's 10-1 victory on Sept. 15. Hiskins' four assists tied the record held by three players. Most recently, All-American Jen Pratt recorded four assists against American on Sept. 21, 1997. Hiskins has been credited with a career-high 14 assists this season ties her for the seventh-best single-season effort in school history.
Meharg An NCAA Champion
Missy Meharg was a member of the 1982 National Championship lacrosse team at the University of Delaware. Maryland plays Delaware in College Park on Sept. 21.
Welsh Continues To Be Perfect
Sophomore Autumn Welsh (Allentown, Pa.) continued her career-long perfection on penalty shots with the third and fourth of her career (in four shots) during the 1999 Terrapin Invitational. She scored only penalty shots against both Georgetown and Ball State. Welsh is a perfect three-of-three this season (she also scored one against Old Dominion on Sept. 5) and made her only attempt against Duke as a freshman.
Welsh With Career-High
Sophomore Autumn Welsh was credited with a single-game career-high three assists and a single-game career-high five total points in Maryland's victory over Georgetown on Sept. 18. She is enjoying her best offensive season and has totaled a career-high four goals, a career-high 11 assists and a career-high 19 total points. Welsh scored two goals and added one assist for five total points in 21 games as a freshman in 1998.
Palchinsky With Game-Winners
Sophomore Kristy Palchinsky scored three goals last week in helping Maryland to three victories. She was credited with the first two game-winning goals of her career against Towson on Sept. 15 and Ball State on Sept. 19. Palchinsky scored a single-game career-high two goals against Ball State in the championship game of the Terrapin Invitational. She has now scored six goals for 12 total points in Maryland's first eight games of the season.
Smith With Career High
Junior Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) has recorded a single-season career-high six assists this season. She has as many assists this season (six) as she did during her freshman and sophomore seasons combined. Smith tied her single-season career-high with three assists in two games during the Terrapin Invitational. She recorded two assists (and one goal) against Georgetown and one assist against Ball State.
Rappolt In On The Act
Junior Sarah Rappolt (West Chester, Pa.) recorded her first career assist in Maryland's 13-1 victory over Georgetown on Sept. 18. In the span of seven days last week, Rappolt recorded one goal (against Massachusetts on Sept. 13) and one assist for three total points. She had totaled four points in the the first 44 games of her career and has totaled three points in the last four games.
Hohnstine With Complete Game
Sophomore Ashley Hohnstine (Oakton, Va.) recorded her first complete game victory against Ball State on Sept. 19. She was also the Terps' starter in goal against Georgetown and played the second half in Maryland's victory over Towson. Hohnstine has started three of Maryland's last four games.
Terps On Record-Setting Pace
Maryland has scored 65 goals in the first eight games of the season. That is an average of 8.1 goals-per-game. The school record for goals in a single-season is 98 (in 22 games) during the 1997 season.
