FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The University of Maryland women's golf team, participating in only the second event in the one-month history of the program, shot a 336 (+48) in the first round of the Lumberjack Women's Invitational at the Aspen Valley Golf Club here Monday. The round of 336 is the second-lowest of the now four rounds played by the team in two tournaments.
The event is the second-ever for the Terrapin women's golf program, which became the 25th sport at the University of Maryland and the 13th for female student-athletes in November of 1998. Freshman Jennifer Gibson (Havertown, Pa.) shot a 79 (+7) on the par 72 course and is tied for 12th place. The 79 marks Gibson's lowest round in her first two collegiate tournaments and is the second-lowest round among all Terp individuals during the first two tournaments. Gibson begins the second day of competition only seven strokes off the lead.
Freshman Brooke Bendler (Salisbury, Md.) enters day two in a tie for 28th place after shooting an 82 (+10). The 82 is Bendler's second-best round of her first four as a collegian. Freshman Erin Clasper (N. Potomac, Md.) is tied for 61st as she shot an 87 (+15), junior Sarah Bedford (Gaithersburg, Md.) is tied for 67th with an 88 (+16) and freshman Carter Crowther (Kilmarnock, Va.) is tied for 78th after shooting a 92 (+20).
The two-day event concludes Tuesday. Northern Arizona, the host school, leads the event with two players among the top four individual positions.
