
Maryland Volleyball Team Hosts Virginia, Travels to Florida State

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The University of Maryland volleyball team (7-8, 1-1 ACC) continues the conference portion of its schedule with two more matches this week. On Tuesday, the Terps host Virginia (8-4, 1-1 ACC) at 7 p.m. at Ritchie Coliseum, and on Friday, they travel down to Tallahassee to face Florida State (5-6, 0-1 ACC). The match against Florida State will mark the first time the Terps have played on the road since Sept. 4.
Scouting Maryland
Maryland enters the week 7-8 (1-1 ACC), having split a pair of ACC matches last week. On Friday, the Terps outlasted NC State 7-15, 15-4, 15-2, 11-15, 15-11 but on Saturday, they were defeated by North Carolina 15-9, 15-12, 15-6.
Senior outside hitter Beth Murphy (Golden, Colo.) leads the team with 224 kills and is averaging 4.07 kills per game. Against the Wolfpack last Friday, she posted a career-high 27 kills and committed just four attacking errors in 52 attempts (.442). Murphy also leads Maryland with 136 digs and 27 service aces. Sophomore setter Libby Alberts (Eden Prairie, Minn.) is averaging 9.50 assists per game and junior middle hitter Nnenna Amobi (Silver Spring, Md.) leads the Terps with 1.06 blocks per game.
Scouting Virginia
Virginia enters the week at 8-4 (1-1 in the ACC). After being swept in three games by North Carolina last Friday night, the Cavaliers bounced back by defeating NC State 15-4, 15-6, 12-15, 15-12 Saturday night. Junior middle hitter Deanna Zwarwich had a career-high 24 kills against the Wolfpack. She also notched seven blocks and six digs. Senior middle blocker Jessica Parsons posted 15 kills, nine digs and seven blocks, and sophomore setter Erin Vesey tallied 48 assists. Last season, the Cavaliers advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Series Against Virginia
The Terps lead their all-time series against the Cavaliers 25-6. Last season, however, Virginia swept all three of its meetings against Maryland, winning 15-6, 15-12, 15-12 in Charlottesville, Va., on Oct. 13, 15-3, 15-6, 15-8 on Oct. 30 at Ritchie Coliseum, and 11-15, 15-8, 15-13, 6-15, 15-7 in the second round of the ACC Tournament at Ritchie Coliseum on Nov. 20. Sophomore setter Libby Alberts posted 61 assists and had a career-high 29 digs in the match on Nov. 20. Junior middle hitter Maren Stuart (Tampa, Fla.) notched five total blocks in the Oct. 13 match and six more in the Oct. 30 match. The last Maryland victory over Virginia was a 15-5, 15-4, 15-10 decision on Nov. 4.
Scouting Florida State
Florida State enters the week at 5-6 (0-1 ACC). The Seminoles are coming off a tough 15-8, 15-11, 9-15, 15-8 loss to Duke on Friday night. Norisha Campbell posted a team-high 17 kills against the Blue Devils, while teammate Luana Ruiz Azevedo turned in 15 kills and 15 digs. Jamie Hibbard collected 44 assists. The Seminoles are the defending ACC Tournament champions and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
The Series Against Florida State
Maryland leads its all-time series against the Seminoles 11-7. Last season, Florida State defeated the Terps 15-12, 15-2, 15-10 in Tallahassee, Fla., on Oct. 18, but the Terps won the rematch at Ritchie Coliseum on Nov. 10 15-12, 9-15, 5-15, 15-13, 16-14. Senior outside hitter Beth Murphy posted 14 kills and 11 digs in the Oct. 18 match and sophomore setter Libby Alberts notched 52 assists in the Nov. 10 match.
Career Night
Senior outside hitter Beth Murphy's 27-kill performance against NC State Sept. 24 was the best effort of her career. It marked the sixth time she has posted at least 20 kills in a match, including the fifth time this season.

Making an Impact
Freshman setter Lindsay Davey (Aurora, Colo.) had two of her best matches of the year last week. Against NC State on Sept. 24, she recorded a career-high 12 digs. The following day against North Carolina, Davey notched a career-high 25 assists.
Getting into the Act
Redshirt sophomore Willette Dority (Congers, N.Y.) had the best match of her college career against NC State Sept. 24, as she posted five kills, four digs and seven block assists.
Season-High
Senior outside hitter Kate Hannas (Ellicott City, Md.) had a season-high 14 kills against NC State Sept. 24. It tied the second-highest kill total of her career. Hannas smashed a career-high 19 kills against Duke on Nov. 14, 1998.

With 15 matches in the books so far this season, and with 15 more remaining before the ACC Tournament, senior outside hitter Beth Murphy has recorded 224 kills. At her current pace, she will have 448 kills by the time the ACC Tournament starts, which would be the third-highest, single-season kill total in school history. Former Terp Colleen Hurley's 493 kills in 1990 is the current school record. Last season, Murphy posted 381 kills which is the 10th-best single-season effort in Maryland history.

Four of a Kind
Senior outside hitter Kate Hannas posted four consecutive service aces against North Carolina on Sept. 25. She finished the match with five service aces, which marked the second-best performance of her career. Last season, she posted a career-high six service aces against NC State on Oct. 24. Hannas currently has 16 service aces this season.
Two in a Row
After recording a career-high 14 digs against Georgetown on Sept. 18, sophomore defensive specialist Autumn Wilson (Rising Sun, Md.) turned in her second consecutive double digit dig performance with 10 against NC State on Sept. 24. Wilson started off the season in a reserve role, but has since worked her way into the starting lineup.
Murphy Among ACC Leaders
In the ACC statistics released on Sept. 21, senior outside hitter Beth Murphy ranked fifth with 3.94 kills per game and sixth with 0.45 service aces per game.
An Impressive Combination
Maryland head coach Janice Kruger and assistant coach Susie Homan have flourished as coaches on the NCAA level, both together and individually. In their eight years on the same staff, they have led Nebraska-Omaha and Maryland to a combined 218-96-2 record (.680).
Individually, they have seven NCAA bids (Kruger with four at Maryland and Homan with three during her nine-year career George Washington from 1990-98), five conferences titles (Kruger with two ACC crowns and Homan with three Atlantic 10 crowns) and six conference coach of the year awards (each with three).
