COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland women's golf team continues its first-ever fall schedule as it travels to State College, Pa., to participate in the Nittany Lion Fall Invitational (Oct. 2-3). The Terps' appearance at the Nittany Lion Invitational is their third of four events during the 1999 fall season. Maryland finished in 13th place at last week's Northern Arizona Lumberjack Invitational in Flagstaff, Ariz. It was the highest team finish in the now one-month history of the program. Maryland was led by a trio of players who finished among the top 50 and shot the second-lowest team round on the second day of the event.
Competition at the Lumberjack Invitational
Maryland shot a 330 (+42) in the final round of the Northern Arizona Lumberjack Women's Invitational at the Aspen Valley Country Club to earn a 13th place team finish. The Terps finished 13th among the 17 teams entered in the tournament.
Terps Record Near-Low Team Round
The Terps' 330 score on the par 72 course in round two of the Northern Arizona Lumberjack Invitational is the second lowest team score in their first two tournaments. That score is rivaled only by the 328 score which the team shot in the second round the Unlimited Potential/Baytree Classic in Myrtle Beach. Maryland improved its score by six strokes from its first-round finish. The Terps maintained their consistency as they finished day one in 13th place and finished the tournament in the same position.
Gibson Finishes 17th At Lumberjack Invitational
Freshman Jennifer Gibson (Havertown, Pa.) recorded the top individual finish in the short history of the Maryland women's golf program as she finished in a tie for 17th place at the Northern Arizona Lumberjack Invitational. Gibson shot a 79 (+7) and was tied for 12th place after the first day of the event. Her score in round one was the second lowest by a Terp golfer in the first two events of the fall. Gibson has now shot three of the best four individual rounds for the team. She has shot four rounds of +10 or less and averages a team-leading 81.40 strokes per round.
Bendler Maintains Consistency in Second Tournament
Brooke Bendler (Salisbury, Md.) currently holds the team low score with a 77 (+5) which she shot in the second round of the Unlimited Potential/Baytree Classic on Sept. 11. Her second round score at the Northern Arizona Invitational (81, +9) is tied for the third best individual score while her first round score at the same tournament (82, +10) is tied for the seventh best individual score.
Clasper Records Low Score
Freshman Erin Clasper (Gaithersburg, Md.) recorded her personal-low score in the second round of the Northern Arizona Invitational. Clasper improved her score by six strokes from day one (87, +15) to shoot a personal-best (81, +9) in the second round. Her solid improvement allowed her to move from a tie for 61st place after day one into a tie for 50th place for the tournament.
