
Field Hockey Faces Duke, UVa This Week

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland field hockey team (9-1, 1-0 ACC), which won its ACC opener for the third consecutive season last week, travels to Duke (Sept. 29, 7 p.m.) and plays host to No. 6 Virginia (Oct. 2, 1 p.m.) in a pair of important ACC games this week. The Terps are ranked No. 4 in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll. They will play their third top-10 ranked team as they face Virginia. The Terps are currently riding a seven-game winning streak which began on Sept. 10. Maryland has recorded seven winning streaks of seven or more games during head coach Missy Meharg's 11-year career. The Terps longest winning streak (15 games) during Meharg's tenure came in 1993 - the year of Meharg's first NCAA championship.
Terps in Atlantic Coast Conference Play
Maryland continues defense of its 1998 ACC tournament title as it plays No. 16 Duke and No. 6 Virginia this week. The Terps began the ACC portion of their schedule as they defeated No. 9 Wake Forest on Sept. 25. Maryland holds a 13-3 all-time record against Duke and defeated the Blue Devils, 7-3, on Oct. 17, 1998. The Maryland-Virginia series is tied at 18-18-2. The Terps defeated the Cavaliers, 1-0, in overtime to win the 1998 ACC Tournament championship.
Tagliente Continues Climb, Now Ranked Sixth
Junior forward Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) totaled three points (one goal and one assist) in Maryland's 4-0 victory over Wake Forest on Sept. 25 to move into sole possession of sixth place on the Terps' all-time career total points chart with 107. She surpassed former Maryland star Judy Dougherty (1977-80) who totaled 105 points during her four-year varsity career. Tagliente has scored 41 goals and added 25 assists during her 54-game career. Her 41 goals rank as the seventh-highest career total in school history while her 25 assists is tied for the sixth-highest total in school history.

Sophomore Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) has scored a career-high 17 goals this season. Her total is currently tied for the seventh-best single-season total in school history. Walter has scored at least one goal in all 10 games this season and has accounted for at least one point in 10 of the last 12 Maryland games dating to the 1998 ACC Tournament. She has scored her career high of three goals twice this season (Aug. 29 vs. Virginia Commonwealth and Sept. 10 vs. Boston University. She averages 3.9 points per game in helping the Terps to their 9-1 start.
Hohnstine Blanks Wake Forest
Sophomore Ashley Hohnstine (Oakton, Va.) recorded her first complete-game shutout and recorded a career-high six saves in Maryland's 9-0 victory over Wake Forest on Sept. 25. She has started four of Maryland's last six games and allowed only three goals in 254 minutes of play. She has earned complete-game victories over then No. 9 Wake Forest and No. 13 Ball State (Sept. 19) in her last two starts. In 289 minutes played this season she has a goals against average of 0.96.
Gorewitz, Kauffman On Defense
Juniors Lindsay Gorewitz (Rockville, Md.) and Molly Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) were rock solid on Maryland's back line as the Terps shut-out both of their opponents last week. Gorewitz, who has started nine of Maryland's 10 games, helped limit Delaware and Wake Forest to 13 shots combined. Her work has helped Maryland keep two consecutive opponents off the scoreboard for the second time this season. The Terps have recorded five shutout victories in 10 games this season. Kauffman has started all 10 games and scored her career high of two goals as Maryland defeated Georgetown on Sept. 18.
Smith Continues Solid Play
Junior Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) has accounted for a career-high seven assists this season as she continues to be one of the nation's top players. She recorded her seventh assist against Delaware and has been credited with more assists this season (seven) than she had during her freshman and sophomore seasons combined (six). She scored her first career hat trick in the season opener against Virginia Commonwealth on Aug. 29 and totaled four points against Georgetown in the Terrapin Invitational on Sept. 18.
Ehrlich Stops Delaware
Senior goalie Zoe Ehrlich (Montclair, N.J.) recorded her second solo shutout of the season with a one-save performance against Delaware on Sept. 21. The shutout was Ehrlich's second shutout of the season (also against American on Aug. 31) and the third of her career. She has 8.0 shutouts total for her career (three solo and 10 shared).
Palchinsky Heats Up
Sophomore Kristy Palchinsky (Leonardtown, Md.) has started seven of Maryland's 10 games this season and has scored a career high six goals. She scored her career-high of two goals (including the game-winner) against No. 13 Ball State on Sept. 19 in the championship game of the Terrapin Invitational. Palchinsky has totaled 12 points in the first 10 games of the 1999 season after being held pointless during six games of the 1998 season.
Rizzo Scores Winner Vs. Hens
Sophomore Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal in Maryland's 4-0 victory over Delaware on Sept. 21. The goal was her second of the season and the second game-winner of her career. As a freshman, she scored the game-winning goal against No. 1 North Carolina on Oct. 11, 1998. She has recorded a career-high three assists this season.
Rappolt in the Net
Junior Sarah Rappolt (West Chester, Pa.) added the position of goalie to her resume last week. She was added to the lineup during the final four minutes of Maryland's victory over Delaware on Sept. 21 as the last line of defense with the intention of pushing forward on offense. Rappolt wore some of the protective gear usually reserved for a goalie but found herself floating around the midfield line. The Terps held the Blue Hens scoreless and to only one shot while Rappolt was on defense. She has played in all 10 Terp games and recorded one goal and one assist for three total points.
Simon Continues Her Return
Redshirt freshman Kateri Simon (Bel Air, Md.) continued her remarkable return from knee surgery as she earned playing time in Maryland's 4-0 victory over Wake Forest. She has now played in three of the last five Terps games since missing the entire 1998 season and the first five games of the 1999 season because of knee surgery in 1998.
Klingerman Among Leaders
Redshirt freshman Angie Klingerman (Bloomsburg, Pa.) is ranked third among all team members, and first among first-year Terps with nine goals. She scored a career-high four goals against Georgetown on Sept. 18 and began her career with three against Virginia Commonwealth on Aug. 29. Klingerman has played in all 10 games while starting two.
Meharg's Mark
Head coach Missy Meharg has a career record of 174-68-9 (.711 winning percentage).

Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) is the only true freshman to have earned playing time this season. She has played in all 10 games and scored six goals and accounted for two assists for 14 total points. She totaled a career-high seven points (three goals and one assist) against Towson on Sept. 15.

Sophomore Autumn Welsh (Allentown, Pa.) has scored more goals (three-one), accounted for more assists (11-1) and totaled more points (17-5) in 10 games this season than she totaled as a freshman in 21 games during the 1998 season.

Sophomores Megan Kelly (Gaithersburg, Md.) and Carol Senkler (Hockessin, Del.) have played in all 10 games this season. Kelly was credited with her first career assist against Georgetown while Senkler has totaled two goals and one assist.

Junior Rachel Hiskins has accounted for at least one point in each of Maryland's 10 games this season. She has totaled three or more points in eight of the Terps' 10 games.

Sophomore Caroline Walter has scored at least one goal in each of Maryland's 10 games this season. She has scored a career-high 17 goals and averages 1.7 goals per game.
