Field Hockey Looks To Bounce Back On Road

The Maryland field hockey team (2-1, 0-0 ACC) travels to the northeast this weekend to play Boston University (Sept. 10, 7 p.m.) and Massachusetts (Sept. 12, 1 p.m.) in Amherst, Mass., this weekend. The Terps won their first two games of the season before falling to Old Dominion, 5-3, on Sept. 6 in Norfolk, Va. Maryland returns home Sept. 15 as they play host to Towson before hosting the Terrapin Invitational on Sept. 18 and 19.
Tagliente Moves Into Top 10
Junior Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) recorded three assists in two
games least week to bring her career points total to 88 and move into
sole possession of 10th place all-time on Maryland's scoring list. She
moved past two-time All-ACC selection Cheryl Rudio (1985-88) with two
assists against Old Dominion on Sept. 6.

Tagliente Shooting For Triple Crown
Junior Carla Tagliente needs only four assists to join Maryland's top 10
list for career assists. She could become only the sixth player in
school history to rank in Maryland's all-time top 10 in goals, assists
and total points. She currently ranks seventh in goals (36), and 10th
in total points (88).

Rizzo Returns to Her Home State
Sophomore Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.) returns to her home state this
weekend as the Terps play two games at the University of Massachusetts.
Rizzo attended Walpole High School where she was an All-America
first-team selection as a senior in 1997. During her career, she became
the first player in state history to score more than 100 career goals.
Following her senior season during which she scored 32 goals and added
31 assists she was named Boston Herald Player of the Year. Rizzo's
hometown of Walpole is located about 90 miles southeast of Amherst.
Nine Terps Named to ACC Honor Roll
Nine field hockey players, including five members of this year's team,
were among 162 Terp student athletes recently named to the ACC Academic
Honor Roll. The ACC Honor Roll is comprised of those student athletes
who recorded a grade point average of 3.0 or better for the full 1998-99
academic year. The current members of the team who were named to the
honor roll are: Carol Senkler (Hockessin, Del.), Carla Tagliente
(Cortland, N.Y.), Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany), Emily Ward
(Ellicott City, Md.) and Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.).
Tagliente With Two Assists
Junior Carla Tagliente was credited with a single-game career-high two
assists against Old Dominion. She earned assists on both goals by
sophomore Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) against the Monarchs.
She has four assists this season and 16 for her career. She is within
four assists from moving into Maryland's all-time career top 10 for
assists.
Walter Is Terps' Scoring Leader
Sophomore Caroline Walter leads the Terps in goals (six) and total
points (13) through the first three games of the season. She led the
Terps with two goals against Old Dominion on Sept. 6. Her six goals
through the first three games of the season nearly matches her goal
scoring total (nine) from her freshman season.
Welsh Adds First Goal of Season
Sophomore Autumn Welsh scored on a penalty stroke against Old Dominion
for her first goal of the 1999 season. Her goal in the second half of
the Terps' game against Old Dominion tied the game at two with just over
25 minutes remaining in the game. Welsh is now a perfect two-of-two
(1.000 percent) in penalty strokes during her career. She also
converted a penalty stroke against Duke on Oct. 17, 1998.
Welsh Ties Single-Season High
Sophomore Autumn Welsh has scored one goal and added a single-season
career-high three assists for a single-season career high tying five
total points. She scored a single-season career high two goals and
totaled five points as a freshman in 1998.
Messimer Scores Two Goals
Freshman Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) scored the first two goals
of her career against American on August 31. She scored two first-half
goals to help the Terps take a 3-0 halftime lead and an eventual 6-0
victory at home. Messimer has played in all three of the Terps games
this season and earned her first career start against No. 2 Old Dominion
on Sept. 6.
Ehrlich Gains Shutout
Senior tri-captain Zoe Ehrlich (Montclair, N.J.) gained her second
career solo shutout against American on Aug. 31. It was her first solo
shutout since Oct. 10, 1997 against Rutgers. Ehrlich has 10 career
shared shutouts.
Hiskins With Career-High Assists
Junior Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia) was credited with a
career-high three assists against American on Aug. 31. Her three
assists against American were more than her 1998 season total of two.
Hiskins has scored a career-high three goals, added a career-high five
assists and totaled a career-high 11 total points this season. She
totaled six points in 1998.
Klingerman Stays Hot
Redshirt freshman Angie Klingerman (Bloomsburg, Pa.) has scored four
goals in Maryland's three games this season. She scored her first
career hat trick against Virginia Commonwealth on Aug. 29 and scored one
against American on Aug. 31.
Smith Among Team Leaders
Junior tri-captain Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) has scored four goals
and added one assist for nine total points in three games this season.
She netted her first career hat trick against Virginia Commonwealth on
Aug. 29 and scored one goal and added one assist against American on
Aug. 31.
Rizzo With Career-High In Assists
Sophomore Dina Rizzo has recorded a single-season career-high two
assists in the first three games of the season. She recorded assists
against both Virginia Commonwealth and American. She has more assists
in three games during the 1999 season (three) than she had in 22 games
during the 1998 season (one).
Terps Defense Blanks American
Maryland's defense not only shutout American (6-0) on Aug. 31, but also
held the Eagles without a shot or a penalty corner.
The Starting Lineups
Head coach Missy Meharg has employed three different starting lineups
during the early part of the season. A total of nine players (Welsh,
Tagliente, Hiskins, Ehrlich, Walter, Molly Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.),
Smith, Megan Kelly (Gaithersburg, Md.) and Rizzo) have started each of
Maryland's three games while Lindsay Gorwitz (Rockville, Md.) has made
two starts, Carol Senkler (Hockessin, Del.) has also started two games
while Carissa Messimer and Kristy Palchinsky (Leonardtown, Md.) have
started one game each.
Terps vs. Richmond Postponed
Maryland's game scheduled for Sept. 5 at Richmond was postponed because
of Tropical Storm Dennis and has been rescheduled for Oct. 27 at 3:30
p.m.
