With an 11-1 record on the season, Maryland field hockey coach Missy Meharg is just one win away from notching her 200th career coaching victory.
The 13-year Terps coach boasts a 199-69-9 career coaching mark (.718 winning percentage) at Maryland, and could reach the 200-win mark Wednesday when Maryland travels to Piscataway, N.J., to take on Rutgers. The three-game road trip continues Saturday at Virginia Commonwealth and concludes Sunday at No. 2 Old Dominion.
Meharg, who coached the Terps to NCAA titles in 1993 and 1999 and is Maryland's winningest coach in school history, ranks 16th all-time in coaching victories. The Terps' 5-0 victory over Virginia on Oct. 1 pushed Meharg past her former coach Mary Ann Hitchens, who accumulated a 196-76-33 record at Meharg's alma mater, Delaware.
With six regular-season games remaining on the schedule and the ACC Tournament to follow, Meharg could move into 15th place before the season ends. Judith Davidson amassed a 206-67-23 record at Iowa from 1978-87.
Meharg, one of only four coaches in Division I history to win multiple national field hockey titles, also has led Maryland to three ACC titles (1993, 1998, 1999) and produced 42 All-Americans.
Meharg, who also was an assistant coach during the Terps' 1987 national title run, also has coached 24 players who have went on to compete at the international level, including appearances in the Olympic Games, Pan American Games and the World Cup.
In 1999, Meharg enjoyed one of her most successful seasons in Maryland history as the Terps won the NCAA Division I national championship, the ACC championship, a school-record 24 games and a school-record 22 consecutive games to close the season.
Last year's squad also included four All-Americans, five All-ACC team members, four players selected to the NCAA All-Tournament team, eight players named to the NHFCA All-Academic squad and 10 to the ACC Honor Roll.
Meharg, a three-time NCAA Division I coach of the year (1991, 1993, 1999), also had a successful playing career. While at Delaware, Meharg was a two-time All-America forward and Broderick Award nominee.
Meharg also competed with the U.S. national team from seven years (1985-91). She was a member of the 1986 World Cup team and an alternate to the 1987 Pan American and 1988 Olympic teams.
