COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland field hockey squad (13-2, 2-1 ACC) returns home to host a pair of ranked opponents this week at the Artificial Turf Facility. The Terps meet No. 11 James Madison on Friday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. before squaring off against ACC-foe No. 3 North Carolina on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.
The reigning national field hockey champions posted a 2-1 record last week. With a 6-3 win at Rutgers, the Terrapins gave head mentor Missy Meharg her 200th career coaching victory. A game later, the Terp keeper made a career-high nine stops in a losing effort against perennial national rival Old Dominion.
The Terps look to rebound against the Dukes and Tar Heels after being edged, 2-1, by the No. 2 Monarchs on Oct. 15. The loss was only the Terps' second of the season and first defeat in the last four meetings with ODU.

With a goal in Maryland's 4-0 blanking of Virginia Commonwealth, three-time All-American and Honda Award hopeful Carla Tagliente increased her career total to 71. The new count for the senior moves her past former Terp Lisa Buente's all-time record total of 70, set between 1987 and 1990. Tagliente is now the all-time goals leader with 71 and counting.
The tri-captain eclipsed Buente's all-time points mark of 165 on Sept. 23, 2000, vs. Wake Forest. Tagliente now has 180 career points and counting.
The midfielder is currently tied for first on the team in goals scored (17) and is in the lead with four game-winners. Tagliente is also second in points (41) and is fourth with seven assists this season.
Terps At A Glance
The Terrapins look to get their trademark brand of attacking hockey back on track this week against ranked opponents James Madison and North Carolina. The Terp attack, led by All-Americans Carla Tagliente, Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia), Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) and Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) has pummeled opponents throughout the season with 84 scores (5.51 gpg) on 384 shot attempts (25.6 spg), while Maryland's backfield anchored by seniors Molly Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.), Lindsay Gorewitz (Rockville, Md.) and juniors Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.) and Kristy Palchinsky (Leonardtown, Md.) has limited the opposition to 20 goals (1.31 gpg) on 100 shots (6.7 spg).
Between the pipes, Maryland's junior keeper Ashley Hohnstine has been solid, posting six shut outs on the season including three against ranked teams. The Terp keeper boasts a 1.20 goals against average and a .754 save percentage. She made a career-high nine saves vs. No. 2 Old Dominion on Oct. 15.
Home Sweet Home
The Terrapins return to the friendly confines of the University of Maryland's Artificial Turf Facility for the remaining three regular season matches and for the ACC Championships, to be held Nov. 2-5 in College Park. The Terps' own a 7-0 record at home this season and have not been beaten on their home campus in 21 games, since suffering a 5-1 NCAA Quarterfinal loss to Virginia to end the 1998 season.
Hohnstine Sparkles In The Cage
Maryland keeper Ashley Hohnstine put on a spectacular performance against No. 2 Old Dominion on Oct. 15, collecting a career-high nine saves. The junior held the Monarchs scoreless with seven stops during the first half alone. Maryland's goalie posted her sixth shut out of the season on Oct. 14 at Virginia Commonwealth. Three of Hohnstine's blankings have come against NFHCA ranked opponents in then-No. 12 UMass on Sept. 16, then-No. 8 Princeton on Sept. 30 and No. 10 Virginia on Oct. 1.
Kelly And Klingerman Provide Scoring Punch
Junior Megan Kelly (Gaithersburg, Md. ) and sophomore Angie Klingerman (Bloomsburg, Pa.) have provided the 2000 Terps with plenty of offense in reserve roles. The duo has combined for 26 points off the bench, with six goals and one assist each.
Kelly has struck in two of the past three games, chipping in two goals in Maryland's 6-3 victory over Rutgers and adding the Terps' lone score vs. No. 2 Old Dominion.
Klingerman contributed a goal and an assist as the Terps blanked Virginia Commonwealth, 4-0, on Oct. 14.
Scouting JMU: The Deal With The Dukes
The Terps meet No. 11 James Madison on Friday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. The Dukes own a 10-5 overall record and a 3-1 Colonial Athletic Conference slate thus far in the 2000 season. Common opponents include Towson (W, 5-1), VCU (W, 6-0), Duke (L, 2-3) No. 3 UNC (L, 4-1), Richmond (W, 5-1) and No. 10 Virginia (L, 3-2). JMU is coming off a 3-1 loss to No. 14 William & Mary.
The Dukes have a potent weapon in senior forward Liz Sanders, who is second in the nation in scoring with 23 goals and four assists for 50 points. Junior Traci Forchetti has netted twelve and dished three for 27 points, while senior Theresa Dinallo paces JMU with six assists. Senior goalie Amanda Latz owns a 1.72 goals against average and a .747 save percentage.
Former Terp standout goalkeeper Irene Horvat is in her first season on the Dukes' sideline. The 1995 Maryland grad was a two-time All-American and still holds Maryland career and single-season goalie records. She was a key contributor on the 1991 and 1992 NCAA semi and quarterfinalist squads and was a member of the 1992 national champion lacrosse team. Horvat spent five years as an assistant at UConn before taking her current post.
The Terps hold a 17-5-3 record over the Dukes and took four out of the past five meetings.
Scouting UNC: Tar Heel Tidbits
The third-ranked Tar Heels enter this week's action after improving to a 15-1, 3-0 ACC record with shutout victories over Michigan and Virginia. The Heels have won ten in a row since dropping a 1-0 decision to No. 2 Old Dominion in Chapel Hill on Sept. 16.
The 1999 NCAA quarterfinalists rank in the Top Ten nationally in both scoring offense and scoring defense. They are led in 2000 by a quintet of seniors, including forwards Holly Huff and Kristen McCann, and back Jana Toepel. Sophomore Amy Tran protects North Carolina's cage.
Head coach Karen Shelton is in her 20th season and owns a 332-80-9 career record, good enough for third all-time in coaching victories. She is a three-time national coach of the year and has earned the conference honor five times.
The Terps trail in the all-time series, 13-25-0 headed into Sunday's 1 p.m. match-up. Maryland beat the Heels, however, in two overtimes during the 1999 regular season and in strokes to eliminate them from the 1998 ACC championship tournament. The Terrapins have taken three consecutive meetings after suffering two overtime defeats in 1997.
