The Maryland/NC State Series
The Terps and Wolfpack will meet for the 42nd time Tuesday night with Maryland holding a 25-16 series advantage. Just over a week ago, Mayland defeated NC State (3-1) 6-15, 15-3, 15-13, 15-10, for win number 700 in Maryland volleyball history.
The Wolfpack in 2000
It has been a rough road for the Wolfpack as they enter Tuesday's match with a 7-13 overall record and a 1-7 mark in the ACC. Last weekend NC State lost a pair of matches to ACC rivals Duke and Wake Forest, both in four games. On the year, junior outside hitter Charese Williams leads the team with 281 kills and is second on the squad with 188 digs. Williams led the Wolfpack with 19 kills earlier this season versus the Terps. Freshman setter Crystal Shannon has been super in her first season for the 'Pack leading the team in assists with 842, good for an average of 11.23 assists per game. Shannon tallied 47 assists at Maryland on Oct. 7.
The Maryland/North Carolina Series
The Terps and Heels will hook up in an ACC battle for the 37th time this Sunday at Carmichael Auditorium on the campus of the North Carolina. Maryland lost in three games (0-3) 13-15, 10-15, 12-15, to Carolina at Ritchie Coliseum on Oct. 6. The Tar Heels hold a 20-16 series advantage over Maryland.
The Tar Heels in 2000
The defending ACC champions have picked up right where they left off last season as Carolina is 17-4 overall and 7-1 in the ACC. The Tar Heels lost their first match of the season in conference play over the weekend falling to Wake Forest at home (2-3) 7-15, 6-15, 15-10, 16-14, 13-15. UNC bounced back Sunday with a win over rival Duke (3-1), 15-8, 15-13, 11-15, 15-8. Freshman outside hitter Nicole Reis led the Tar Heels with 17 kills in their 3-0 win in College Park on Oct. 6.
Last Time Out
The Terps won their third straight match of the season by defeating Connecticut (3-2) 12-15, 15-11, 6-15, 15-11, 15-10, in a grueling five-game match. The win was a special one for Kruger as she defeated former Terp and current Connecticut head coach Kelli Myers. Myers was a two-time All-ACC selection under Kruger in 1988 and 1989.
Sophomore outside hitter Carey Brennan (Smithburg, Md.) was sensational in the win for Maryland. The team-leader in kills and digs, Brennan produced a match-high 21 kills to go along with 11 digs and five blocks. Senior middle hitter Nnenna Amobi (Silver Spring, Md.) had a solid all-around effort with 15 kills, seven blocks and four service aces for the winners.
Kruger Just Five Wins Shy Of 250
With two victories over the weekend, Terrapin head coach Janice Kruger is just five wins short of the 250-mark for her tenure at Maryland. The ACC winningest active coach, Kruger and the Terps have eight matches remaining on the schedule and also the ACC tournament to get win number 250.
Sophomore Sensation
Sophomore outside hitter Carey Brennan has picked up right where she left off as a freshman. Only the third Terp ever to be named to the ACC All-Freshman team, Brennan has been a force this season. The Smithburg, Md., native, recorded her 500th career dig this season. Brennan leads the team in kills (306) and digs (256). In her last two matches, Brennan has recorded 20-plus kills in Maryland's last two matches, both wins.
Senior Duo
Maren Stuart and Nnenna Amobi (Silver Spring, Md.) have been solid in the middle leading a young Maryland team this season. Stuart and Amobi give the Terps a potent 1-2 punch at the middle hitter position. Stuart is second for the Terps in hitting percentage (.285) and is third in kills (188). Amobi leads the team and the ACC in service aces with 36. The Maryland native also ranks first on the squad in blocks (65), second in kills (194) and third in hitting percentage (.278).
Career Notes
With her seven kills versus Connecticut over the weekend, freshman outside hitter Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) reached the century mark for her career in kills with 105. Here is a list of other Terps that are close to reaching major accomplishments in their career:
Trina Scalza needs one dig for 100. Nnenna Amobi needs one block for 200. Lindsay Davey needs five assists for 1,000 and 25 digs for 300. Maren Stuart needs 11 kills for 500. Amanda Ayres needs 24 kills for 200 and 53 digs for 400. Carey Brennan needs 61 digs for 600 and 84 kills for 600.
Airing It Out
Sophomore outside hitter Amanda Ayres (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) has made an immediate impact in her first year as a starter.
Ayres ranks second on the team in digs with 188. The Maryland native also ranks in the top five on the roster in attacks (488, 2nd) and kills (145, 4th). Ayres has started every match for the Terps this season and is one of four freshmen or sophomores that make up the Terrapin starting lineup.
Head Coach Janice Kruger
Janice Kruger has one of her youngest teams here at Maryland as she enters her 13th season with the Terps. The winningest active coach in the ACC with 245 victories, Kruger has been named ACC Coach of the Year three times (1990, 1996, 1997).
Kruger has enjoyed a stellar coaching career compiling an impressive 617-250-6 record. During her time at Maryland, Kruger has totaled 245 wins while losing only 154.
New Assistants Named
Jennifer LaGrange and Xiangrong Liu were both added to the Maryland coaching staff this past offseason. LaGrange comes to Maryland from Southwest Texas State University where she was the first assistant from 1997-99. During her three years at Southwest Texas State, LaGrange helped lead the Bobcats to a 63-35 (.643) record, a Southland Conference tournament championship in 1998 and a NCAA bid that same season.
Liu arrives at Maryland after being the assistant coach at the University of Dayton for seven seasons. During his time at Dayton, the Flyers went 133-86 (.616) and were the 1998 Atlantic 10 champions.
Alberts Out For The Season
Junior setter Libby Alberts (Eden Prairie, Minn.) will miss the entire 2000 season as she recovers from off-season shoulder surgery. A two-year starter for the Terps, Alberts has led Maryland in assists both years she has been in College Park. Last season Alberts ranked ninth in the ACC per game in assists with 8.32.
Cherry Creek Connection
Janice Kruger knows where to go to find a setter, Cherry Creek High School in Aurora, Colo. Former Terp Eden Kroeger along with current Terp setter Lindsay Davey are both alumni from Cherry Creek.
Kroeger played four seasons for the Terps from 1994 to 1997. During that span, Kroeger was named to the freshman All-ACC team, twice named first-team All-ACC and is the only Terrapin ever named an All-American ('97).
Davey has shined in her first season as starter for Maryland. Davey leads the team in assists (805), good for 11.34 per game.

Georgia Tech comes to Ritchie Coliseum on Friday, Nov. 3, for a 7 p.m. match with the Terps. Clemson rounds out the home portion of the 2000 schedule as the Tigers come calling on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 5 p.m.
