COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After posting a 2-1 record last week, the Maryland field hockey squad (13-2, 2-1 ACC) placed third in this week's 2000 STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll, released Oct. 17. The Terps take over the third spot after 11 consecutive polls at the top, dating back to Oct. 26 of last season. Maryland takes aim at No. 14 James Madison (10-5) on Oct. 20 at 6 p.m., before a match-up with ACC rival and now No. 2 North Carolina (15-1) on Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at the Artificial Turf Facility on Maryland's campus.
Eight of this week's Top 15 teams can be found on Maryland's 2000 slate. The Terps punished No. 8 Connecticut, 9-1 (Aug. 26), outlasted No. 1 Old Dominion 5-4 in 2OT (Sept. 3) and blanked No. 9 Massachusetts, 2-0 (Sept. 16), No. 7 Princeton, 2-0 (Sept. 28), and No. 10 Virginia, 5-0 (Oct. 1). The Terps suffered a loss at the hands of No. 4 Wake Forest (Sept. 23) before being edged by No. 1 ODU in a Norfolk rematch on Oct. 15. Maryland had taken the previous three meetings with the Monarchs before the loss. The team looks to rebound this week at home vs. the 14th-rated Dukes and second-ranked Tar Heels.
Below is a listing of the Top 20 teams in the 2000 STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, as voted upon by NFHCA member coaches, with records through October 15, 2000 and total points (first-place votes are in parentheses).
