Postgame Quotes From Maryland's Victory Over Wake Forest

Oct. 21, 2000

Recap| Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md.

Maryland Head Coach Ron Vanderlinden:

"We won, and we needed to win. We think we have the makings of a good football team and we've just come off the third toughest schedule stretch in the country. I thought the players came out with a great deal of determination and intensity. We were determined to find a way to come out and win this game, and I'm glad it turned out to be in the fashion it was but I didn't expect it. I would have been happy with a one point victory."

"We believe in ourselves. We played a tough stretch and we made some mistakes. You can't do anything about what's behind you but you can do everything about what's in front of you. We really needed to come out and win today and I feel good that we were able to accomplish that."

On LaMont Jordan and Mukala Sikyala:
"LaMont wasn't really full speed all week [because of a hip pointer]. He really wasn't able to practice the way he needs to practice. Mookie took most of the reps all week and I thought he looked good today, and played well - 14 carries for 113 yards... He's a good player."

On his team's defense:
"I thought overall the defense played very well. We shut their running game down to next to nothing... We got some turnovers that set up excellent field position. When we stopped them on the goal line and blocked the field goal - that was a great effort by the rushers. And when Randall [Jones] came up with that interception [that was a key]."

Wake Forest Head Coach Jim Caldwell:

On Mike Whaley's field goal block:
"That was tough, because of the fact that it was a chip shot field goal for the most part and they knocked us back and got in there and blocked it."

On the quarterback situation:
"The offense is under question when you look at our quarterback situation with MacPherson. We have one more guy, if he goes we really have problems."

On injury to Anthony Young:
"He hurt his knee. There is some swelling on the knee. We will evaluate how serious it is tomorrow."

On getting down early:
"We went into the half down 14-0, that wasn't bad. I think our defense played pretty well to stop them. To not be able to score hurt, we had to answer at some point in time."

"We were able to run the ball like we had been running consistently and chew up some time off the clock and keep our defense off the field."

On Maryland:
"I think their team is playing hard and playing well."

On Sikyala
"You can see he is a pretty good runner even before this ball game. Sometimes it was difficult to tell the difference between him and Jordan."
