Terps At A Glance
The Terrapins combined their trademark brand of attacking hockey with excellent goalkeeping and tight defense to knock off their seventh NFHCA Top 20 opponent in 2000 in No. 14 JMU, and keep the No. 2 Tar Heels at bay for all of regulation in a heartbreaking overtime loss. The Terp attack, led by All-Americans Carla Tagliente, Rachel Hiskins, Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) and Keli Smith has pummeled opponents all season long with 88 scores (5.10 gpg) on 410 shot attempts (23.8 spg), while Maryland's backfield anchored by seniors Molly Kauffman, Lindsay Gorewitz and juniors Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.) and Kristy Palchinsky (Leonardtown, Md.) has limited the opposition to 21 goals (1.22 gpg) on 117 shots (6.8 spg). Between the pipes, Maryland's junior keeper Ashley Hohnstine has been tough, posting seven shutouts on the season including four against ranked teams. The Terp keeper boasts a 1.10 goals against average and a .773 save percentage. She made a career-high nine saves vs. No. 2 Old Dominion on Oct. 15.

A Team Of Many Weapons
With nine Terrapins totalling two or more goals in 2000, seven Terps with at least five scores and four with over 10, opposing defenses have had their hands full to say the least. The balanced Terrapin attack is led by senior Rachel Hiskins, who picked up right where she left off in 1999 when she scored a school-record 67 points. The center midfielder currently paces Maryland with 18 goals and 12 assists for 48 total points. Three-time All-American Carla Tagliente (17 goals), junior All-American Caroline Walter (15 goals) and sophomore Carissa Messimer (11 goals) round out the top four in scoring, while senior All-American Keli Smith has set the standard with 13 season assists.

Hohnstine Stonewalls Sanders, JMU
Maryland keeper Ashley Hohnstine put on a spectacular performance against No. 14 James Madison, blanking the Dukes and the nation's second leading scorer, senior forward Liz Sanders. The junior totaled six saves in collecting her seventh shutout of 2000. Including the 4-0 win over JMU, four of Hohnstine's shutouts have come against NFHCA ranked opponents: then-No. 12 UMass on Sept. 16, then-No. 8 Princeton on Sept. 30 and No. 10 Virginia on Oct. 1. Hohnstine improves to a 1.10 goals against average and a .773 save percentage.
