COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With convincing shut out victories over No. 8 Princeton and No. 10 Virginia last week, the No. 1 Maryland Terrapins (9-1, 1-1 ACC) remain atop the 2000 STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll, released Oct. 3. The Terps earned fourteen first place votes, five more than in Sept. 26's poll. Maryland has captured the No. 1 spot in the previous nine NFHCA votes, dating back to Oct. 26 of last season.
Eight of this week's Top 20 teams are on Maryland's 2000 schedule. The No. 1 Terps have met No. 9 Connecticut (W, 9-1, Aug. 26), No. 2 Old Dominion (W, 5-4 2OT, Sept. 3), No. 7 Massachusetts (W, 2-0, Sept. 16), No. 4 Wake Forest (L, 5-3, on Sept. 23), No. 8 Princeton (W, 2-0, on Sept. 28) and No. 10 Virginia (W, 5-0, on Oct. 1). Later on the schedule, Maryland squares off against ODU again in Norfolk (Oct. 15) before hosting No. 12 James Madison (Oct. 20) and No. 3 North Carolina in an ACC tilt on Oct. 22. The Terps host unranked Stanford and previously ranked Duke this Friday and Sunday at the Artificial Turf Facility. Four of five ACC field hockey squads dot the Top Ten. The 2000 ACC Field Hockey Tournament comes to College Park Nov. 2-5.
Below is a listing of the Top 20 teams in the 2000 STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, as voted upon by NFHCA member coaches, with records through October 1, 2000 and total points (first-place votes are in parentheses).
