The Yellow Jackets are fresh off a three-game victory over Clemson (3-0) 15-12, 15-10, 15-10, last Friday in Clemson, S.C. Georgia Tech has been led all season by junior middle hitter Ky Bell. The California native ranks first on the team in kills (333) and blocks (94), and recorded 24 kills and seven blocks in Georgia Tech's win earlier this season over the Terps. Along with Bell, the Jackets have two other players with 300-plus kills on the roster. Junior rightside hitter Enkeleida Mabry has 314 kills and Maja Pachale has smacked 311 for the ACC leaders.
The Maryland/Clemson Series
For the 39th time, the Terps and Tigers will tangle on the volleyball court Saturday evening. Clemson holds a 20-18 advantage over Maryland including the Tigers' three-game (0-3) 11-15, 6-15, 8-15, win on Sept. 29 at Clemson.
The Tigers in 2000
The Tigers (10-14, 4-7 ACC) have had a rough road this season after finishing 31-3 last year and qualifying for the NCAA tournament. Clemson will look to sweep the season series over the Terps and their sixth straight win in the series. Rightside hitter Jodi Steffes leads the Tigers with 339 kills and 1999 ACC Rookie of the Year, sophomore setter Jessi Betcher, ranks first on the squad with 940 assists.
Last Time Out
The Terps dropped their third consecutive match of the season, losing at Florida State (0-3) 10-15, 12-15, 3-15, Sunday in Tallahassee, Fla.
Sophomore outside hitter Carey Brennan (Smithsburg, Md.), Maryland's team leader in kills and digs, smacked a match-high 15 kills and recorded six digs in the loss. Senior middle hitter Maren Stuart returned to her home state, finishing with nine kills, six blocks and three digs. Sophomore setter Lindsay Davey (Aurora, Colo.) handed out 42 assists in the loss for Maryland.
Senior Day At Ritchie
The Terrapins will look to improve on its impressive 7-3 home record with two matches this weekend, including Senior Day, Saturday afternoon versus Clemson. Maryland head coach Janice Kruger is 7-5 during her tenure in College Park on Senior Day.
Kruger Closing In On 250
With the Terps' win over NC State , Terrapin head coach Janice Kruger is just four wins short of the 250-mark for her tenure at Maryland. The ACC's winningest active coach, Kruger and the Terps have four matches remaining on the schedule and also the ACC tournament to get win number 250.
Sophomore Sensation
Sophomore outside hitter Carey Brennan has picked up right where she left off as a freshman. Only the third Terp ever to be named to the ACC All-Freshman team, Brennan has been a force this season. Brennan leads the team in kills (373) and digs (294). Brennan recorded a career-high 28 kills in Maryland's five-game win over NC State on Oct. 23.
Senior Duo
Maren Stuart and Nnenna Amobi (Silver Spring, Md.) have been solid in the middle leading a young Maryland team this season. Stuart and Amobi give the Terps a potent 1-2 punch at the middle hitter position. Stuart is second for the Terps in hitting percentage (.277) and is third in kills (220). Amobi leads the team and the ACC in service aces with 37. The Maryland native also ranks first on the squad in blocks (78), second in kills (244) and second in hitting percentage (.272).
Career Notes
With just 21 assists, sophomore setter Lindsay Davey will record 1,000 assists for the season. Davey already reached the 1,000-mark this season in career assists, reaching the honor on Oct. 23 at NC State. Here is a list of Terps who are closing in on career milestones:
Amanda Ayres needs 10 kills for 200 and 22 digs for 400.
Carey Brennan needs 23 digs for 600 and17 kills for 600.
North Of The Border
Freshman outside hitter Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario) has had an increasing role in the last seven matches for the Terps. After playing sparingly in the first part of the season, DiLivio has seen more playing time and has the results to show for it. On Oct. 23, DiLivio sparked Maryland with 11 kills in a five-game win over NC State. The only Canadian on the team, DiLivio has 67 kills and 51 digs for the year, including a career-high 13 kills versus Morgan State on Sept. 16.
Head Coach Janice Kruger
Janice Kruger has one of her youngest teams here at Maryland as she enters her 13th season with the Terps. The winningest active coach in the ACC with 246 victories, Kruger has been named ACC Coach of the Year three times (1990, 1996, 1997).
Kruger has enjoyed a stellar coaching career compiling an impressive 618-253-6 record. During her time at Maryland, Kruger has totaled 246 wins while losing only 157.
New Assistants Named
Jennifer LaGrange and Xiangrong Liu were both added to the Maryland coaching staff this past offseason. LaGrange comes to Maryland from Southwest Texas State University where she was the first assistant from 1997-99. During her three years at Southwest Texas State, LaGrange helped lead the Bobcats to a 63-35 (.643) record, a Southland Conference tournament championship in 1998 and a NCAA bid that same season.
Liu arrives at Maryland after being the assistant coach at the University of Dayton for seven seasons. During his time at Dayton, the Flyers went 133-86 (.616) and were the 1998 Atlantic 10 champions.
Alberts Out For The Season
Junior setter Libby Alberts (Eden Prairie, Minn.) will miss the entire 2000 season as she recovers from off-season shoulder surgery. A two-year starter for the Terps, Alberts has led Maryland in assists both years she has been in College Park. Last season Alberts ranked ninth in the ACC per game in assists with 8.32.
Cherry Creek Connection
Janice Kruger knows where to go to find a setter, Cherry Creek High School in Aurora, Colo. Former Terp Eden Kroeger along with current Terp setter Lindsay Davey are both alumni from Cherry Creek.
Kroeger played four seasons for the Terps from 1994 to 1997. During that span, Kroeger was named to the freshman All-ACC team, twice named first-team All-ACC and is the only Terrapin ever named an All-American ('97).
Davey has shined in her first season as starter for Maryland. Davey leads the team in assists (971), good for 11.52 per game.
Next Up For The Terps
The Terps wrap up the 2000 regular season schedule with two ACC matches on Nov. 10-11.
Maryland faces a pair of Tobacco Road schools to close out the year. The Terps face Duke, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in Durham before wrapping up the 2000 campaign on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. at Wake Forest.
