COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Field hockey forward Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) was named ACC Co-Player of the Week after scoring four goals in two Maryland victories over Stanford and Duke. After capping the Terps' 8-1 victory over the Cardinal with the final goal of the game, the 1999 All-Region selection buried Duke with a hat trick performance. Messimer scored the game winner in the shutout win before a two-goal flurry to end the contest. The sophomore recorded two hat tricks as a freshman in 1999, scoring three goals apiece vs. Towson (Sept. 15) and Georgetown (Sept. 18).
Messimer is a first-time ACC Player of the Week honoree. She is fourth on the Terp squad with 10 season goals and fifth with 21 points. Her game winner against Duke was her first of the season, but Messimer's "most famous" game winner came vs. Michigan in the 1999 NCAA Championship game.
Carissa is the daughter of Linda and Robert Messimer. She is majoring in letters and sciences.
Messimer shares the honor with North Carolina senior Holly Huff, who also notched a hat trick in a game vs. Radford.
