COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland field hockey program was honored with the presence of a national-leading six Terrapins on 2000 AstroTurf/NFHCA Division I All-America teams. The number of Terp student-athletes taking national recognition ties the 1993 Maryland squad for the most in school history, which also featured six All-Americans. Three Terps were selected to the first team after the Terrapins posted a 19-4 season slate en route to Maryland's sixth NCAA semifinal appearance.
Three components of the nationally second-rated Terrapin attack were honored with first team recognition. Senior Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.), who eclipsed Maryland's all-time goals and points records this season, became the second Maryland field hockey four-year All-American in program history. The midfielder joins former Terp Kim Turner as a four-time selection, who was a first-teamer in 1985, 1987 and 1988 and a second-teamer in 1986. She also joins Turner and former Terp Christine DeBow (1995-97) in becoming a three-time first team honoree.
Senior Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia), the Terps' leader in goals, assists and points this season, and classmate Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) who was second on the Terps' squad in assists, became first-time first team selections. Hiskins was a second-teamer in 1999, and Smith was a two-time second team selection in 1998 and 1999.
Junior Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) was honored for the second time in her career, this time as a second team member. Walter, who was a 1999 first-teamer, ranked third on the Maryland team in goals, assists and points in 2000. The forward was Maryland's lone representative on the 2000 NCAA All-Tournament team.
Members of the Terps' nationally eighth-rated defense were represented on the second team. Senior back Molly Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) and junior Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.) became first-time All-America selections, both as members of the second team. Maryland's backfield allowed only 28 season goals (1.20 goals against) on 149 shots (6.5 spg), and sparked a Terp offense that netted 114 scores (4.90 gpg) while totaling 560 shots (24.3 spg).
