
Volleyball Team Wraps-Up Regular Season On Tobacco Road

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The University of Maryland women's volleyball team (13-13, 4-10 ACC) closes out the 2000 regular season this weekend with a pair of matches on Tobacco Road versus Duke and Wake Forest. The Terrapins battle the Blue Devils Friday, November 10, at 7:30 p.m. Maryland returns to the court Saturday, November 11, for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Demon Deacons. The Terps return to Wake Forest just one week later for the 2000 ACC Tournament, November 16-19. With just two games remaining in conference play, the Terps begin the week eighth in the conference with a 4-10 record.
The Maryland/Duke Series
The Terps and Blue Devils meet for the 40th time Friday night when the two teams meet in Durham. Maryland will look to avenge its four-game loss (1-3) 11-15, 15-11, 6-15, 10-15, to the Blue Devils Sept. 23 at Ritchie Coliseum.
The Blue Devils in 2000
Duke enters the week with a record of 17-11 and 6-8 in the ACC, which places the Blue Devils sixth in the conference standings. Ashley Harris leads the Blue Devils with 306 kills and 39 service aces. In the first meeting with the Terps, Nina Rybak led the Duke attack with 18 kills and two blocks for the winners. Setter Pamela Gottfred leads Duke on the season with 963 assists, good for an average of 11.20 per game.
The Maryland/Wake Forest Series
For the 18th time, the Terps and Demon Deacons will tangle on the volleyball court Saturday evening. Maryland holds an impressive 13-4 series adavantage, but Wake Forest got the best of the Terps the last time the two schools met. The Demon Deacons defeated the Terrapins in four games (1-3), 15-10, 10-15, 11-15, 11-15, Sept. 19 at Ritchie Coliseum.

Wake Forest is currently in third place in the ACC with a 8-6 record in conference play. For the season, the Demon Deacons are 17-8 and have won four out of its last five matches. Florida State snapped Wake's four-match winning streak last time out winning in five games. Junior outside hitter Trina Maso de Moya led the Deacs with 23 kills and 19 digs. Junior middle blocker Margaret Davidson chipped in 18 kills, while senior middle blocker Corie Miles bolstered the Deacon defense with 11 digs. Sophomore setter Ashlee Phillips assisted on 54 balls, while Davidson collected four total blocks.
Last Time Out
The University of Maryland women's volleyball team closed out the 2000 home schedule with a loss to ACC-foe Clemson (1-3) 15-8, 8-15, 6-15, 9-15, Saturday evening at Rtichie Coliseum. The match was the final one at home for Maryland seniors Nnenna Amobi (Silver Spring, Md.) and Maren Stuart (Tampa, Fla.).
The two seniors did their part as they were two of the four Terrapins on the day to record double-digit kills. Stuart pounded 11 kills to go along with 10 digs and two blocks while Amobi smacked 10 kills and registered three blocks. Freshman outside hitter Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario) had her best performance in a Terrapin uniform with career-highs in kills (18) and digs (14). Sophomore outside hitter Carey Brennan (Smithsburg, Md.) also recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs.
Clemson was led by outside hitter Jodi Steffes. Steffes led the Tigers with a match-high 27 kills along with 16 digs. With the win, Clemson improved to 12-15 overall and 5-8 in the ACC. Maryland fell to 13-13 on the year and 4-10 in the conference.
Kruger Closing In On 250
With the Terps' win over NC State , Terrapin head coach Janice Kruger is just four wins short of the 250-mark for her tenure at Maryland. Second in the ACC in wins, Kruger and the Terps have two matches remaining on the schedule and also the ACC tournament to get win number 250.
Sophomore Sensation
Sophomore outside hitter Carey Brennan has picked up right where she left off as a freshman. Only the third Terp ever to be named to the ACC All-Freshman team, Brennan has been a force this season. Brennan leads the team in kills (390) and digs (312). The 390 kills place Brennan ninth on the all-time single season list for the Terps.
Senior Duo
Maren Stuart and Nnenna Amobi (Silver Spring, Md.) have been solid in the middle leading a young Maryland team this season. Stuart and Amobi give the Terps a potent 1-2 punch at the middle hitter position. Stuart is second for the Terps in hitting percentage (.272) and is third in kills (234). Amobi leads the team in service aces with 37. The Maryland native also ranks first on the squad in blocks (83), second in kills (258) and first in hitting percentage (.275).
Career Notes
With just five more digs, Carey Brennan will reach the 600-mark for her career at Maryland. Here is a list of Terps who are closing in on career milestones:
Amanda Ayres needs 10 kills for 200 and 10 digs for 400.
Maria DiLivio needs 10 kills for 100.
Lynnsy Jones needs two digs for 150.
North Of The Border
Freshman outside hitter Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario) has had an increasing role in the last nine matches for the Terps. After playing sparingly in the first part of the season, DiLivio has seen more playing time and has the results to show for it.
DiLivio had a match to remember on Senior Night as the freshman tallied career-highs in kills (18) and digs (14) in Maryland's loss against Clemson.
The only Canadian on the team, DiLivio has 90 kills and 66 digs on the season.
Head Coach Janice Kruger
Janice Kruger has one of her youngest teams here at Maryland as she concludes her 13th season with the Terps. The second-winningest active coach in the ACC with 246 victories, Kruger has been named ACC Coach of the Year three times (1990, 1996, 1997).
Kruger has enjoyed a stellar coaching career compiling an impressive 618-253-6 record. During her time at Maryland, Kruger has totaled 246 wins while losing only 159.
New Assistants Named
Jennifer LaGrange and Xiangrong Liu were both added to the Maryland coaching staff this past offseason. LaGrange comes to Maryland from Southwest Texas State University where she was the first assistant from 1997-99. During her three years at Southwest Texas State, LaGrange helped lead the Bobcats to a 63-35 (.643) record, a Southland Conference tournament championship in 1998 and a NCAA bid that same season.
Liu arrives at Maryland after being the assistant coach at the University of Dayton for seven seasons. During his time at Dayton, the Flyers went 133-86 (.616) and were the 1998 Atlantic 10 champions.
Alberts Out For The Season
Junior setter Libby Alberts (Eden Prairie, Minn.) will miss the entire 2000 season as she recovers from off-season shoulder surgery. A two-year starter for the Terps, Alberts has led Maryland in assists both years she has been in College Park. Last season Alberts ranked ninth in the ACC per game in assists with 8.32.
Cherry Creek Connection
Janice Kruger knows where to go to find a setter, Cherry Creek High School in Aurora, Colo. Former Terp Eden Kroeger along with current Terp setter Lindsay Davey are both alumni from Cherry Creek.
Kroeger played four seasons for the Terps from 1994 to 1997. During that span, Kroeger was named to the freshman All-ACC team, twice named first-team All-ACC and is the only Terrapin ever named an All-American ('97).
Davey has shined in her first season as starter for Maryland. Davey leads the team in assists (1,047), good for 11.38 per game. The 1,047 assists also place Davey ninth on the all-time single-season list in Maryland volleyball history.

The 2000 ACC Tournament is right around the corner, Nov. 16-19, on the campus of Wake Forest University.
