COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After winning a pair of matches over No. 4 Wake Forest and No. 9 Virginia en route to its third consecutive ACC title, the Maryland field hockey squad (17-3) moved to No. 2 in the 2000 STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll, released Nov. 7. Now the Terps await the results of the latest NCAA Poll and their seed and site for the national championship tournament, which will be released later this evening. Fans and media can join the Terrapins in watching the Internet broadcast of the NCAA selection show at 8 p.m. EST at www.ncaachampionships.com.
The Terrapins entered last weekend's ACC Championship as the No. 3 seed in the coaches poll behind No. 1 Old Dominion and No. 2 North Carolina. In the NCAA Poll most recently released Oct. 16, Maryland was the fourth-rated team, also trailing No. 3 Wake Forest. The Terps leaped to the two-spot in the coaches poll with a 3-1 semifinal victory over the Demon Deacons and a 3-0 championship win over the Cavaliers.
The reigning national champion Terps have posted eight victories against teams rated in the STX/NFHCA Top 20, with five of those coming by shutout. The Terps' three losses this season have all come against Top 5 teams, and have been by a total of four goals. The Terps split two-game season series with now No. 1 Old Dominion and No. 4 Wake Forest.
Below is a listing of the Top 20 teams in the 2000 STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, as voted upon by NFHCA member coaches, with records through Nov. 5, 2000 and total points (first-place votes are in parentheses).
