Dec. 19, 2000
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Three Maryland women's soccer players have been named to the Soccer Buzz Mid-Atlantic All-Region team for 2000. Junior forward Sara Gustafson (Reisterstown, Md.), freshman midfielder Audra Poulin (Silver Spring, Md.) and sophomore midfielder Carly Viher (Mentor, Ohio) were all named to the Mid-Atlantic regional third team. Poulin and fellow freshman forward Katie Ludwig (Mount Laurel, N.J.) were named to the Mid-Atlantic All-Freshman team.
Gustafson led the Terps in scoring with nine goals and 20 points, playing in all 19 games. She also led in game-winning goals with three. She opened the year with her first career hat trick as the Terps upset then-No. 4 Penn State, 3-1 on August 29. Gustafson tied the school record for goals in a game with four against Howard on Oct. 11. She came back for two goals -- both on headers -- as Maryland topped James Madison on Oct. 17. Overall, in her Maryland career, Gustafson has scored 13 goals, all of which have come in six games. Last season she also posted a multi-goal game in an upset 4-3 overtime win over then-No. 9 Duke on Sept. 19, 1999. Gustafson finished her junior campaign among the top ten in the ACC in goals and goals per game. She ranked in a tie for sixth in total goals with nine. She also ranked in a tie for seventh in goals per game with 0.47.
Poulin was an impact freshman for the Terps coming out of Rockville High School. She played in all 19 games, starting 13. Poulin recorded two assists during the season. She was named to the Stanford Nike Invitational for her strong play in the mid-September tournament.
Viher recorded five points (one goal and three assists) for career bests in 2000, playing in all 19 games. As a freshman Viher started all 22 games, but did not record a point. In 2000, she took a more offensive role from the backline and registered her first college goal in the season-opening win over Rutgers on Aug. 25. She continued the offense in her second game of 2000, as she picked up her first college assist on Gustafson's first goal of the 3-1 win over Penn State. Viher posted her second assist in the win over Towson on Sept. 6.
Ludwig finished second on the team in goals with five and second in points with 13. She scored her first two college goals in the Terps' loss to Santa Clara on Sept. 15 at the Stanford Nike Invitational. Ludwig was named to the Stanford Nike Invitational All-Tournament team for her performance. She became the first player with the name "Ludwig" to score a goal at Maryland's home field of the same name in the win over Howard, when she scored twice. She also scored in the Terps' 2-0 win over Florida State on Oct. 20.
