PINEHURST, N.C. - Freshman Erin Clasper shot an eight-over-par 80 on Monday to lead the Maryland women's golf team to a 338 team score and a 17th-place ranking after the first round of the Edwin Watts/Carolina's Collegiate Classic at Pinehurst No. 8 at the Pinehurst Country Club. The event is the first traditional spring competition date for the team that began play last fall.
Clasper, a freshman from N. Potomac, Md., is in a group of five players tied at eight-over-par. She shot a stellar 38 on the front nine and closed with a 42.
Other Terp performances on Monday saw freshman Carter Crowther and sophomore Brooke Bendler shoot 84, freshman Jen Gibson a 90 and junior Sarah Bedford a 95.
Two-time Maryland men's captain Jason Rodenhaver was named as the first head coach in the program's history on Nov. 18, 1998. It was then, just over one year ago, that he began the task of building the brand new program that played its traditional spring event today.
