COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Senior volleyball outside hitter Beth Murphy (Golden, Colo.) and senior baseball outfielder Larry Long (Columbia, Md.) are among 16 ACC student-athletes who have been awarded the 2000 Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship. The announcement was made today by the Atlantic Coast Conference.
In order to be eligible for the $5,000 scholarship, a student-athlete must have excelled both in the classroom as well as athletically. In addition, they must have a desire to continue their academic career as a full-time graduate student.
In her senior season with the Terps' volleyball program, Murphy led the squad with 428 kills and 309 digs. She is just the sixth player in Maryland history to post 400 or more kills in a single season. After transferring from Duquesne prior to her junior season, Murphy has made the Dean's List every semester she has been at Maryland.
This marks the third time in the past four years that a Maryland volleyball player has been awarded the Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship. Shannon Saltzman received the scholarship in 1997 and Eden Kroeger was honored in 1998.
Long, who is a tri-captain on the baseball team, has 54 career stolen bases. He needs just six more steals to break the school record of 59 stolen bases. Long has made the Dean's List every semester he has been at Maryland. Last year, he received the Spirit of Maryland Award for his extensive volunteer work in the community.
The Weaver-James-Corrigan Award is named after former ACC commissioners Jim Weaver, Bob James and Gene Corrigan.
