Maryland Women's Golf Begins Play At Carolina's Collegiate Classic

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's golf team participates in first traditional spring event as it travels to Pinehurst, N.C., to play in the Edwin Watts/Carolina's Collegiate Classic on Feb 28-29. The Terps are scheduled to compete against 25 teams on the par-72, 5,809-yard course. The Terps enter their first match looking to ride the momentum they gained as they finished fourth at the Great Smokies Invitational in their final event of the fall. Following its play at the Carolina's Collegiate Classic, the team will participate in the Northern Illinois Snowbird Invitational in Tampa, Fla. on March 15-17.
A Quick Look At The Terps' Women's Golf Team
Sarah Bedford: A transfer from Radford University who will serve as team captain in her first season at Maryland ... participated in two fall tournaments, the Unlimited Potential/Baytree Classic and the Northern Arizona Lady Lumberjack Invitational ... averaged 87.70 strokes per round in five rounds ... best round was an 83 in the third round of the Unlimited Potential Classic.
Brooke Bendler: A transfer from the University of Mississippi who will join the Terps' starting five this season ... a very consistent player who participated in all four fall tournaments ... achieved her top single-round score of 75 during the third round of the Penn State Nittany Lion Invitational in State College, Pa. ... her 75 was tied for the second best individual gross score and tied for fourth best score vs. par during the fall season among all the Terp players.
Jessica Burrows: A walk-on member of the team this season ... began playing golf only two years ago ... did not participate in the sport of golf until she came to the University of Maryland ... began playing the game during her freshman year and has displayed a great deal of potential.
Erin Clasper: Will compete for tee time as one of the team's top newcomers ... participated in all four fall tournaments and finished among the top 12 in two events ... averaged 81.70 strokes per round in 10 rounds to place second on the team during the fall season ... one of two players to card a top-10 individual finish ... top outing came at the Great Smokies Championship as she finished in a tie for 10th with a 14 over-par 158 score.
Carter Crowther: Regarded as the top high school golfer in the state of Virginia during her prep career ... will immediately become one of the Terps' top golfers ... participated in all four tournaments during the fall season ... finished fourth on the team with a strong 83.50 stroke average in 10 rounds ... finished tied for seventh in leading the Terps to a fourth-place finish at the Great Smokies Championship.
Jennifer Gibson: A very talented golfer who has the ability to be one of the top golfers in the ACC during her career ... participated in all four fall tournaments ... the Terps' top golfer with an 80.60 stroke average in 10 rounds ... was the most consistent Terp during the fall season as all of her scores were between 77 and 84 ... three scores in the 70s tied for the team lead ... best individual finish came at the Northern Arizona Lady Lumberjack Invitational as she finished in a tie for 17th place.
Lori Koch: Will contend for playing time during her first season at Maryland ... a local golfer who achieved much success as a prep golfer across the state of Maryland ... participated in one tournament during the fall ... averaged 89.00 strokes in three rounds ... was a member of Maryland's rotation at the Nittany Lion Invitational and helped the Terps to an eighth-place team finish ... best score came in round three of the Nittany Lion Invitational with an 85.
Holly Thornton: Will compete for playing time in her first season at Maryland ... participated in two tournaments during the fall ... averaged 87.20 strokes per round in five rounds ... best score of 78 came in round three of the Nittany Lion invitational ... her score of 78 was the 11th best gross score while her score vs. par was also among the Terps' individual bests during the fall season.
