COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore Gillian Cote (Fredericksburg, Va.) won the all-around with a school-high 39.625 as the No. 19 Maryland women's gymnastics team defeated the Temple University Owls 197.125-189.225. Maryland's team score is the highest in school history, beating the previous high-team score of 195.95 set on Feb. 4 at the Governor's Cup. Maryland also set team records in bars with a 49.325 and in floor with a 49.550.
The Terrapins earned several scores above a 9.900 en route to the final home victory of the season. On the uneven bars, Cote and sophomore Laura Moon (Scottsdale, Ariz.) tied for first place with scores of 9.925, all-time individual highs in that event. Sophomore Alyssa Mealey (Bensalem, Pa.) earned a career high 9.900 on bars. On beam, junior Jill Fisher (Huntington, N.Y.) took first place with a 9.900, her season high on beam. On the floor exercise, Cote, Fisher and Moon all scored above a 9.900 with Cote taking first with a 9.975, Fisher earning second with a 9.950, and Moon coming in third with a 9.925.
The Terrapins conclude the regular season at 12-7, 4-0 at home and 4-1 in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL). Next weekend, the Terps are travelling to Pittsburgh, Pa. for the 2000 EAGL Championships. Maryland is going into the meet at No. 2 in the EAGL. The meet will be held on Saturday, March 18 at 6 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House.
