Terp Men's Golf Finishes Seventh At Birkdale Classic

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. - Keith Unikel (Laurel, Md.) was a model of consistency and Gary Mankulish shot a 2-under par 70 on the final day of competition Sunday as the pair of Maryland seniors led the Terrapin men's golf team to a seventh-place finish at the Birkdale Collegiate Classic.
Unikel (74-74-74--222) and Mankulish (79-73-70--222) each tied for 17th-place individually, with Virginia Commonwealth's William Ted Brown. Maryland (899, +35) finished two strokes behind Virginia Tech and Wake Forest, tied in fifth. Virginia Commonwealth won the team championship by holding off Mississippi through windy playing conditions during Sunday's final 18 holes at the 7,013-yard, par 72 Birkdale Golf Club.
The Terrapins were knotted with Virginia Tech after 18 holes of play, led by sophomore Scott Ehrlich (Blue Bell, Pa.) shot a one-over par 73 in his opening round. Ehrlich, though, shot 83 and 82 in his final two rounds to offset Mankulish's flurry and a second-round 70 by sophomore Corey Brigham (Rumson, N.J.).
Only four other golfers matched Mankulish's second and third round total of 143, and those golfers finished first through fourth in the tournament, including champion Erik Knudsen (66-70-72--208) of VCU.
Brigham (76-70-79--225) finished 27th for the Terps. Freshman John Moheyer (Lima, Ohio) finished 68th (86-81-79--236) and Ehrlich (73-83-82--238) was 74th.
Maryland, hoping for a return to the NCAA East Regional for a second straight season, returns to the Carolinas for a pair of outings within the next nine days. The Terps compete at the Bradford Creek Invitational in Greenville, N.C., next Friday and Saturday, March 17 and 18. Maryland participates in the Cleveland Golf Collegiate Championships at Aiken, S.C., on Monday and Tuesday, March 20 and 21.
