
Maryland Women's Golf Heads To Third Spring Event

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's golf team, fresh from its seventh place finish at the Northern Illinois University Snowbird Invitational in Tampa, Fla., returns to the links in the ninth annual Campbell College Fighting Camel Classic at the Keith Hill Country Club in Buies Creek, N.C. The Terps are one of 11 teams entered in the event which includes the defending champion and host school Campbell University. The Camels won the event last year with a score of 617 while the Jordan Lintz of Wyoming won the individual honors with a six-over-par score of 150. Maryland is participating in its third event of the spring season and has one regular season tournament remaining before the Atlantic Coast Conference championships in Clemmons, N.C., on April 14-16.
Terps Show Marked Improvement
The Maryland women's golf team, under the tutelage of head coach Jason Rodenhaver, finished seventh in a field of 20 teams at the Snowbird Invitational on March 16-17. The Terps improved their position in the team standings by 10 places (seventh from 17th), cut 39 strokes (630 from 669) and finished 39 (+54 from +93) strokes closer to par at the Snowbird Invitational as compared to their performance at the Carolina's Collegiate Invitational (Feb. 28-29).
Individual Terps Also Show Improvement
Freshman Jen Gibson (Havertown, Pa.) improved her overall score by 30 strokes from her first event (185 at the Carolina's Collegiate) to her second event (155 at the Snowbird Invitational). Gibson also improved her individual placement by more than 100 positions as she moved from a tie for 122nd at the Carolina's Collegiate to a tie for 20th at the Snowbird Invitational. Her individual improvement allowed the Terps to improve by 10 positions in the team standings from their first event (17th of 26 teams) to their second event (seventh of 20 teams). In addition to Gibson's overall improvement, freshman Erin Clasper (N. Potomac, Md.) improved by 10 strokes and 15 positions, freshman Carter Crowther (Kilmarnock, Va.) improved by eight strokes and 35 positions and junior Sarah Bedford (Gaithersburg, Md.) improved by five strokes and 21 positions.
Terps By The Numbers
Freshman Erin Clasper became the first golfer in the short history of the Maryland women's golf program to shoot par with her second-round score of 72 at the Snowbird Invitational ... Clasper's score of 72 was the second lowest in school history as she shot a 71 (on a par 70 course) at the Nittany Lion Invitational on Oct. 1, 1999 ... Clasper became the second golfer in school history to record a top 10 individual finish with her sixth place finish at the Snowbird Invitational ... Freshman Carter Crowther finished in a tie for seventh place at the Great Smokies Championship on Oct. 25-26, 1999 ... Junior Brooke Bendler (Salisbury, Md.) is currently ranked third on the team with an 84.75 stroke average ... Three of Bendler's four rounds during the spring season have been 84 or below ... Maryland is the only ACC team participating in the Fighting Camel Invitational ... The Terps begin play in their first ACC Tournament on April 14 at the Salem Glen Country Club in Clemmons, N.C. ... The ACC Tournament will be the Terps' only three-round event of the spring season.
