
Terps' Women's Golf Looks Ahead To Snowbird Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's golf team takes a week off before participating in the Snowbird Intercollegiate at the Pebblecreek Golf and Country Club of Tampa, Fla. The event, which is part of the Rolex Collegiate Golf Tour, is a jam-packed field of 22 teams who will compete for the championship. Methodist University returns to defend the tournament championship that it won in 1999 with a score of 619. The Snowbird Invitational is the second tournament for Maryland this spring. The Terps finished 17th out of 26 teams at the Carolina's Collegiate Invitational on Feb. 28-29.
Terps At The Carolina's Classic - A Recap Freshman Erin Clasper (N. Potomac, Md.) finished in a tie for 31st place while junior Sarah Bedford (Montgomery Village, Md.) recorded a 10-stroke improvement from day one to lead Maryland to a 17th-place finish in the Edwin Watts/Carolina's Collegiate Classic on Pinehurst course No. 8 at the Pinehurst Country Club. As a team the Terps improved by seven strokes on day two and held the same consistent position in the team standings at which they finished on day one. Clasper finished in a tie for 31st place as she shot an 80 during both rounds for a two-day total of 160. Clasper finished in a group of eight players that finished 16 over-par for the tournament. Bedford improved her score by 10 strokes (95 to 85) and improved her position 12 spaces (125 to 113) during the two-day event. Other Terp performances saw Carter Crowther (Kilmarnock, Va.) shave two strokes off her day-one score (84 to 82). Sophomore Brooke Bendler (Salisbury, Md.) was consistent as she shot an 84 during both rounds to finish in 73rd place.
Clasper Turns In Consistent Performance Freshman Erin Clasper, who finished in a tie for 31st place, was the most consistent Terp during the Carolina's Collegiate Invitational. She finished with scores of 80 in both rounds to lead the team to a 17th place finish. It marked the seventh consecutive round that Clapser has shot 81 or better dating to the fall season. Clapser averaged 81.7 strokes in 10 rounds during four tournaments in the fall. She had the second-lowest average on the team.
Bedford Cards Greatest Improvement Junior Sarah Bedford, the only upperclassmen in the Terps' starting lineup, carded the top round-to-round improvement in last week's Carolina's Collegiate Invitational. After shooting a 95 and finding herself tied for 125th after the first day of competition, Bedford roared back the next day to shoot an 85. Her 10-stroke improvement allowed her to improve her standing by 12 places.
Crowther Also Enjoys Strong Outing Freshman Carter Crowther, who averaged 83.50 strokes during four tournaments in the fall, continued her strong and consistent play during the Carolina's Collegiate Invitational. She totaled a 166 (83.00 average) for the two-day event and finished in a tie for 63rd place. Crowther finished day one with a 12-over-par 84 and improved with a 10-over-par 82 on the second day. She was one of two Terps to improve her score on day two of the tournament.
Bendler Strong In First Collegiate Event Sophomore Brooke Bendler, a transfer student-athlete from the University of Mississippi, performed well in her first collegiate event last week. Bendler did not play for Mississippi during her freshman season and was a member of Maryland's starting four at the Carolina's Collegiate Invitational. She carded an 84 in both rounds to finish in a tie for 63rd place with a 166 total during the two-round tournament.
